Researchers from Japan examined the effect of panaxatriol derived from ginseng on muscle protein synthesis after resistance exercise. They published their study in the journal Nutrition Research.
In the study, the researchers hypothesized that panaxatriol triggers the mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) signaling and muscle protein synthesis by activating both the Akt and extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) signaling pathways.
They also hypothesized that panaxatriol stimulates muscle protein synthesis when combined with resistance exercise.
To test their hypothesis, the researchers divided rats into control, panaxatriol-only, exercise-only, and exercise and panaxatriol groups.
Rats in the panaxatriol and exercise group received 0.2 grams per kilogram (g/kg) immediately after exercise.
Results showed that the muscle protein synthesis was significantly increased three hours after resistance exercise by mTORC1 signaling in rat skeletal muscle.
In addition, muscle protein synthesis higher in the exercise and panaxatriol group.
In conclusion, the findings of the study suggested that panaxatriol derived from ginseng improves muscle protein synthesis after resistance exercise.
