Beijing’s CRACKDOWN on religion undermines U.S. security and global freedom

  • The Chinese Communist Party is systematically suppressing Christians, Muslims and Buddhists – imprisoning clergy, demolishing churches and banning religious practices under the guise of "Sinicization" and state security.
  • Beijing's crackdown extends beyond its borders, targeting even U.S. citizens like Grace Jin Drexel (daughter of imprisoned Pastor Ezra Jin) with harassment, surveillance and intimidation abroad.
  • Experts warn that China's religious persecution mirrors historical precursors to tyranny (e.g., pre-WWII fascism) and poses a direct challenge to global democracy, with tactics like digital surveillance and overseas "police stations."
  • Despite bipartisan calls for sanctions and Pastor Jin's release, the U.S. has failed to impose meaningful consequences on China, even after designating it a "Country of Particular Concern" for religious freedom violations.
  • The CCP's war on faith foreshadows a broader assault on freedom worldwide using censorship, coerced compliance and digital control – demanding urgent action from the free world to resist this encroaching tyranny.

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has intensified its brutal suppression of Christians, Muslims and Buddhists, transforming religious persecution into a transnational security threat – one that now reaches American soil.

During a congressional hearing on Nov. 20, advocates warned that Beijing's campaign against faith groups poses not only a human rights crisis, but also a direct challenge to U.S. national security. Former Sen. Sam Brownback (R-KS) testified that despite China's designation as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC), the regime has faced no meaningful consequences for imprisoning clergy, demolishing churches, and even targeting American citizens abroad. The erstwhile senator served as U.S. ambassador-at-large for international religious freedom during the first Trump administration.

Grace Jin Drexel, daughter of imprisoned Pastor Ezra Jin Mingri, recounted how her father's Zion Church – a thriving underground congregation of 10,000 – was raided in a sweeping CCP operation across nine provinces in October of this year. The regime justified the crackdown by falsely accusing believers of "subverting the state."

But Drexel clarified that they seek only the freedom to worship without surveillance. Despite holding U.S. citizenship, she has faced relentless harassment – from threatening calls impersonating federal agents to CCP operatives stalking her in the District of Columbia.

ChinaAid founder Bob Fu described Chinese paramount leader Xi Jinping's escalating "war against faith." He detailed campaigns to erase religious symbols, ban Bibles for children and criminalize tithes – a centuries-old Christian practice.

Pastors now face decade-long prison sentences for organizing donations, while entire families are left homeless after authorities freeze bank accounts. Fu himself was forced into temporary exile in 2020 when CCP agents surrounded his Texas home, underscoring Beijing's extraterritorial repression.

Silencing the faithful: China's war on Christianity and free thought

The CCP's tactics mirror Mao Tse-tung's Cultural Revolution, where ideological purges sought to eradicate independent thought. Today, Xi's regime employs digital surveillance, forced renunciations of faith and even overseas "police stations" to intimidate dissidents globally.

This crackdown coincides with broader authoritarian trends. As Fu noted, Beijing fears not just churches but any "thoughts of independence," revealing the regime's existential dread of free belief.

According to BrightU.AI's Enoch engine, China's war against religion stems from the CCP's Sinicization campaign, which enforces socialist conformity and suppresses independent faiths to maintain ideological control. This crackdown targets non-approved religious groups, labeling them as threats to the state's "unified identity."

Historically, religious persecution has served as a precursor to wider tyranny. The parallels to pre-WWII fascism – where marginalized groups were first demonized before systemic oppression expanded – are stark. Brownback emphasized that China's actions demand sanctions, yet Washington has hesitated, even as bipartisan lawmakers like Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) push for Jin's release.

The hearing's most chilling revelation was the CCP's transnational reach. Drexel's testimony confirmed that no one – not even Americans – is safe from Beijing's long arm. As Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA) stressed, religious freedom is foundational to democracy; its erosion abroad foreshadows threats at home.

China's war on faith is a blueprint for global authoritarianism. If unchecked, its tactics – already infiltrating Western societies through censorship, coerced compliance and digital control – will redefine freedom itself.

The time for passive condemnation has passed. As Drexel pleaded, "Do not signal defeat with your silence." The battle for liberty, both in China and beyond, hinges on whether the free world will act or acquiesce to the darkness.
