MEMORY HOLE: Google Search’s autocomplete feature omits suggestions related to assassination attempt on Trump
08/06/2024 // Arsenio Toledo // Views

Big Tech company Google is being accused of bias and election interference after it was revealed that Google Search's autocomplete feature omits suggestions related to the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

When Google Search users write down "assassination attempt," the system's autocomplete feature ignores any references to the attempt on Trump's life on July 13, and will instead provide possible searches related to assassination attempts on other famous figures, including former President Ronald Reagan, Nazi German leader Adolf Hitler, Jamaican singer-songwriter Bob Marley and Russian communist leader Vladimir Lenin, among other notable individuals. Users who attempted to look into this themselves even noted that typing the keywords "Trump assassination attempt" yielded no additional terms from Google.

"Big Tech is trying to interfere in this election AGAIN to help Kamala Harris," Donald Trump Jr. wrote on X, formerly Twitter. "We all know this is intentional election interference from Google. Truly despicable."

A spokesperson for Google denied accusations of bias, claiming that "no manual action" was taken to alter autocomplete predictions.

"Our systems have protections against autocomplete predictions associated with political violence, which were working as intended prior to this horrific event occurring," said the spokesperson. "We're working on improvements to ensure our systems are more up to date."

The spokesperson added that the autocomplete feature is "just a tool to help people save time," and Google does not prevent people from searching any terms they want.

"Following this terrible act, people turned to Google to find high-quality information – we connected them with helpful results and will continue to do so," said the spokesperson.

In an updated statement, a Google spokesperson said that it is "rolling out improvements to our Autocomplete systems to show more up-to-date predictions."

"These updates will also address the anomalies for some searches for the names of several past presidents and the current vice president. The issues are beginning to resolve, and we'll continue to make improvements as needed," continued the spokesperson's statement. "As always, predictions change over time and there may be some imperfections. Autocomplete helps save people time, but they can always search for whatever they want, and we will continue to connect them with helpful information."

Google's AI chatbot also refusing to answer queries about Trump assassination attempt

The problems are not limited to Google's search engine but also extend to its artificial intelligence chatbot Gemini.

When users attempt to provide Gemini with prompts related to the assassination attempt on Trump, the chatbot refuses to answer questions, supposedly under what it calls its policy on election-related issues.

"I can't help with responses on elections and political figures right now," Gemini says in response to queries regarding the recent assassination attempt. "While I would never deliberately share something that's inaccurate, I can make mistakes. So, while I work on improving, you can try Google Search."

This policy stems from December 2023, when Google announced that it would be limiting the types of queries its AI programs can answer related to elections across the world, including in the upcoming presidential election in the United States.

"Gemini is responding as intended," said a Google spokesperson. "As we announced last year, we restrict responses for election-related queries on the Gemini app and web experience. By clicking the blue link in the response, you'll be directed to the accurate and up-to-date Search results."

With concerns growing over the tech giant's policies related to elections and politics, more and more people are questioning Google's influence over the upcoming election.
