In a TEOTWAWKI situation, you and your family need to stay put as long as possible. As such, you need to make sure that your home is well prepared to deal with not just invaders, but against nature itself.
Depending on where you live, winters are either going to be cold or extremely freezing. Your home needs to be ready for this. If you have a fireplace or a wood-burning stove, then you need to think about is stocking up on enough firewood. If you don’t have either of these, you need non-electric alternatives like insulating yourself with layers upon layers of clothing.
For defending against home invaders, the first thing you need to do is fortify the perimeter of your property. You can do this by erecting fences and other defensive fortifications like defensive landscaping. Afterward, look to fortifying your home’s points of entry, which means installing doors and windows that can withstand strong attacks.
Lastly, fortify one room in your house which you can turn into a safe room. This is not a place where you will wait for your defeat, but a place where you and your family can regroup and live to fight another day. It must offer, at the very least, the same level of security as your exterior doors and it needs to be filled with the necessary supplies to allow you to withstand an extended siege. Now that your home’s defenses are up, you need to think about all of the supplies you need to fill your home with. Your goal is to avoid having to leave your home for as long as possible, or at least until you can figure out how to grow your own food and raise your own livestock.
The two supplies that you will need the most are food and water. Your goal is to make sure you and your family can eat at least 2,000 calories every day. Stock up on foods that have shelf lives of more than a year, and don’t forget to think about obtaining food for your pets as well.
For water, you need to fill up a lot of containers of clean and drinkable water, with the goal of providing at least one gallon per person per day. You will also need to think about how to replenish your supplies. You should also start stocking up on water filtration supplies such as purification tablets and iodine solution.
Don’t forget to also stock up on firearms and ammunition. Having a variety of guns and ammo will not only help you defend your home, but also help you provide for your family through hunting game.
Other supplies you need to stock up on include hygiene items such as body soap, laundry supplies, textbooks to help you learn new skills, communications equipment to help you reach out to the wider world after SHTF, tools and general medical and first aid supplies.
When the world falls apart, you and your family will need a place you can feel safe and secure in. This is why your home needs to be as ready, and that can only happen if you treat it as a central part of your preps. When the world does end, you will be thankful that you didn’t ignore the importance of your own home.
