Project Veritas journalist James O’Keefe locked out of his Twitter account over bogus copyright claim

Conservative journalist James O'Keefe of the conservative activist group Project Veritas was temporarily locked out of his Twitter account after the company hit him with a copyright claim on a tweet of his that was over nine months old. This comes just several days after O'Keefe and Project Veritas uncovered a ballot harvesting scheme operating in Minneapolis, Minnesota tied to the Democratic Party and Rep. Ilhan Omar.

For a short period of time, O'Keefe was locked out of his account after an unknown figure filed a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) notice on a tweet of his dating back to Jan. 13.

Due to the copyright claim being private, O'Keefe was unable to find out who filed it. Twitter also refused to point out exactly what tweet of his got him a copyright violation. However, the social media giant informed the journalist that he will be allowed to dispute the violation with a counter-notice, despite not knowing anything about the person who filed the complaint.

“WOW. TWITTER LOCKED ME OUT!” wrote O'Keefe in a tweet. “They couldn't even provide proof of a legitimate reason and point to the tweet in question! Some ‘copyright’ violation and they wouldn't even show the tweet in question. Project Veritas has the tech overlords rattled... we're winning.”

O'Keefe and Project Veritas' investigation showed how the Somali migrants and refugees of Minneapolis, who form a significant minority in some of the city's diverse neighborhoods, were exploited by Omar's campaign in order to help her win her reelection in November and to help prevent President Donald Trump from turning Minnesota into a new red state. “We recorded a bunch of these ballot harvesters – including a bunch of them that were doing cash exchanges for ballots – and they go around to the [seniors'] residences, and they actually take ballots from the elderly,” said O'Keefe, explaining their investigation. “They just coerce them. These people could lose their citizenship. [Ballot harvesters] walk into the polls with them and they vote for them.”

Omar's ballot harvesting program is just one part of the Democratic Party's plan for the election. Twitter silencing journalists with ties to Project Veritas

While Twitter refused to provide any specific details to O'Keefe regarding the DMCA takedown notice, Reclaim the Net, an alternative media outlet that promotes free speech online, was able to uncover that the tweet in question was a tweet teasing the release of an undercover investigation held by Project Veritas concerning one of then-Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Bernie Sanders' campaign field organizers, Kyle Jurek.

The investigation found that Jurek was actively calling for political violence and the creation of gulags – Soviet Union-style labor and reeducation camps – if Sanders did not become the Democratic Party's nominee and did not win the November election.

A review of O'Keefe's Twitter timeline between Jan. 13 and 14 showed that the deleted tweet was one of the last that he posted before Project Veritas published the groundbreaking undercover investigation.

This attack by the tech giant is only the latest in a series of offensives against O'Keefe, Project Veritas and other high-profile Twitter users who promote the media outlet's investigations or attempt to recruit new hires through the social media website.

In November of last year, Twitter banned Project Veritas' ads account after the company took down a two-year-old video of theirs that exposed the social media company's practice of “shadow banning,” or the act of blocking a user's content from the wider social network to prevent them from gaining a lot of hits. At the time, Project Veritas was using their ads account to recruit undercover journalists who can work with the outlet.

A month before, Twitter slapped Carpe Donktum, a pro-Trump artist, with a copyright claim on a video he uploaded two years previously. The video in question was a Project Veritas investigation into anti-Trump bias at mainstream media outlet CNN. Donktum, like O'Keefe, was temporarily locked out of his account because of the copyright claim.
