The letter, which pointed out abortion’s “disturbing parallels to Dred Scott,” was signed by a diverse group of over 100 “Democrat and independent religious leaders, professors and community leaders,” according to LifeNews.
“This letter demonstrates the strength of opposition to Joe Biden’s beliefs about abortion, especially from Democratic voters of color and religious voters,” Kristen Day, executive director of Democrats for Life, told LifeNews. “The Democratic Party should seek to include these voters, rather than pushing them into the arms of the Republican Party.
The AP reported,
Among the signatories of the letter are the Rev. Gabriel Salguero, president of the National Latino Evangelical Coalition and a member of former President Barack Obama’s faith-based advisory council; and John DeBerry, a longtime Tennessee state representative and pastor who was recently removed from the Democratic primary ballot due in part to votes against the party’s position.
The open letter to members of the Democratic Platform Committee of the Democratic National Committee began, “Inspired by the Christian faith, we note that the Bible calls on us to speak up in favor of those who do not have a voice,” citing 13 scripture verses related to when life begins and the taking of innocent life.
Furthermore, “The Christian faith invites us to play a particular role in moving the conscience of the American people to end unjust discrimination against certain classes of people, as in previous civil rights movements.“
But it’s not just their faith that compelled the group to speak for the unborn, they also refer to biology, law, racism and human rights – and they brought receipts! (links in original document)
Informed by human reason, we recall that 95% of biologists affirm the biological view that life begins at fertilization. Likewise, we recall the opinion of leading scholars, who have rejected Roe v. Wade as “bad constitutional law.”
We recall that denying personhood to the pre-born child has disturbing parallels to Dred Scott vs. Sandford. Sadly, the US is just one of seven countries, alongside North Korea, to allow the horrific practice of elective late-term abortion after 20 weeks.
Citing “an obligation to speak truth to power in the face of injustice and inequality,” the group noted they “do not presently speak to support or oppose particular candidates or parties” and not all of the signatories are registered Democrats, but they “appreciate the Democratic Party’s stated commitment to human rights, equality, and fairness.” Yeah, Democrats don’t really walk the walk there.
The letter went on:
Accordingly, we urge the Democratic Party to embrace policies that protect both women and children: legal protection for pre-born children, improved prenatal care for women in need, especially women of color, alternatives to abortion, and a comprehensive culture of life free from violence, poverty and racism.
They called on Democrats “to recognize the inviolable human dignity of the child, before and after birth,” “reject a litmus test on pro-life people of faith seeking office in the Democratic Party,” and “end the explicit support in your platform for abortion extremism, such as taxpayer-funded abortion in America and overseas, opposed by 60% and 76% of voters.”
The letter ended noting, “79% of voters oppose elective abortion on demand” and “[t]hey deserve a home in the Democratic Party,” too.
Let's hope someday Democrats get on the right side of history for once and embrace the pro-life issue in their platform.
