Known as the “sunshine vitamin,” vitamin D is actually a fat-soluble hormone that plays a vital role in immune system health. In addition to maintaining bones and teeth, vitamin D also helps to protect against many debilitating diseases, including cancer, heart disease and neurodegenerative conditions.
Unfortunately, vitamin D deficiencies are widespread in the United States - and cause increased susceptibility to many diseases. For instance, recent studies have shown that people with deficient levels of vitamin D have a 122 percent higher risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Other conditions associated with poor vitamin D status include multiple sclerosis, depression and respiratory infections.
In addition to bolstering the immune system, vitamin D also helps the body detoxify carcinogenic heavy metals - which contributes to its anticancer properties.
The body creates vitamin D in response to sunshine, and natural health experts recommend exposure to direct sunlight for at least 20 minutes, several times a week. Although vitamin D is available in certain foods, supplementation is usually required in order to achieve optimal levels in the blood.
For maximum benefit, natural health experts advise supplementing with vitamin D3, or cholecalciferol, which is the form naturally created in the body. Using vitamin D2, or ergocalciferol - the version of vitamin D produced by plants - doesn’t provide the same benefits.

The National Institutes of Health recommend that adults take 600 IU a day of vitamin D - an amount recently raised from 400 IU in response to studies showing vitamin D’s therapeutic benefits.
According to Dr. Cobb, the recommended daily amount is “almost never enough” - especially for the purposes of cancer prevention. And, naturopathic physicians tend to agree, with many prescribing supplementary dosages in the area of 8,000 IU a day - well over ten times the NIH recommendations.
No doubt, there is real confusion about how much vitamin D is really needed to stay healthy.
For example, the Vitamin D Council recommends that adults take 5,000 IU of the vitamin a day - while the Institutes of Medicine state that 4,000 IU is the “tolerable safe upper limit.”
With the bewildering variations in suggested dosages, how much is the right amount?
The answer, says Dr. Cobb, is highly individual - as ideal dosages vary with body weight, color of skin, time spent in the sun, amount of skin exposed to sun, sunscreen use or lack of it, and the altitude and latitude of where you live.
The best way to determine the proper dosage of vitamin D for you, says Dr. Cobb, is through blood tests, which can reveal your vitamin D status. Dr. Cobb reports that he personally takes 4,000 IUs per day in the winter months, and reduces to 1,000 IUs daily in the summer.
