The study, reported in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Medicine, suggests that supplementation of the root may improve muscle size and strength, as well as recovery.
The double-blind study was conducted over an eight-week period. Fifty-seven men between the ages of 18 and 50 were randomly assigned to either a placebo group or a supplement group. The supplement group received 600 mg of ashwagandha root extract once a day. All the men performed workouts during the intervention period and experienced muscle gains. However, the ashwagandha root extract recipients had noticeably larger gains in size and strength, and also experienced greater muscle recovery.
Previous studies have indicated that the root’s abilities to aid metabolic functions extend to muscle development and cell recovery. Ashwagandha root is known for a host of other health benefits such as improved sleep, cognitive function and metabolic function.
