According to the New York Post, which posted exclusive video showing the chaotic scene, around 600 migrants had amassed at the border. The Texas National Guard was trying to organize them into subsets when a group largely made up of single men rushed the troops, pulling away fencing in the process. The migrants vastly outnumbered the guards and knocked them out of the way, scrambling to the border gate near El Paso where they were blocked from entering further by a second gate.
Some of the men in the group were arrested, while others were pushed back to Mexico and some were brought into the U.S. to be processed. According to Border Patrol sources, at least one man was arrested for assaulting a soldier; other charges related to assault and property destruction are expected to be filed.
National Border Patrol Council President Brandon Judd said that agents are going through the video footage to determine who assaulted the soldiers. Although these individuals will be processed for deportation, they will still have the ability to claim asylum. The state of Texas can also charge migrants who assaulted the guards.
The migrant dashboard for El Paso has consistently shown between 2,000 and 2,500 people being held in Border Patrol custody each night recently in what is known as the "spring surge." This is a time of year when the weather starts to get better and thousands of people find the conditions more favorable for making their way from Central and South America into the U.S. illegally.

A spokesperson for Texas Governor Greg Abbott's office said in a statement: “The surge today in El Paso is the direct result of the unsustainable chaos President Biden has unleashed on the border.”
They added that migrants will be held accountable for their actions: “The Texas Military Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety quickly gained control of the situation and are working to repair the damage."
“These illegal immigrants committed crimes in Texas, and the Department of Public Safety is under instruction to arrest every illegal immigrant involved for committing criminal trespass and destruction of property.”
One videographer who was present at the scene, James Breeden, posted on X that it was “one of the wildest scenes I’ve ever seen in my time covering the border.” Reporter Jennie Taer described what happened as a “riot” and said the scene was “absolute chaos.”
Although the migrant numbers have been very high lately, the problem is only expected to grow as the weather improves. Many are willing to take their chances and cross illegally in hopes of taking advantage of free housing, healthcare and welfare thanks to Biden’s open borders policies, and now they can also use the very progressive squatters’ rights laws in much of the nation to steal Americans’ homes.
Customs and Border Protection has announced it is increasing patrols in the area following the incident.
Earlier this week, the Supreme Court allowed a new anti-illegal immigration law to go into effect in Texas giving police the power to arrest illegal immigrants. However, it was only in effect for a short time as the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals blocked it again a few hours later. The Biden administration maintains that the law encroaches on federal responsibility for enforcing immigration law, but Texas insists it had to take action because Biden has not been securing the border and deporting illegal immigrants.
