One of them is a 35-year-old Army corporal named Roberto Perdigones, who revealed to local news outlet El Espanol how an administrative gender change under the new law has seen his pension increase, unlocked the child benefit since he is now recognized as a "mother" and facilitated a move to a private room in the barracks with a private bathroom.
"On the outside, I feel like a heterosexual man. But on the inside, I am a lesbian woman, which prevails. That's why I made the legal change to being a woman," Perdigones said. The man, who is equipped with male genitalia and sported facial hair, has a son and admits still being attracted to women.
In the country, an individual can now legally change to the female sex through their self-declaration with the Civil Registry of the gender they identify as, without the need for medical reports or hormone treatment. "As I can do it, I do it," he said. "Before, I was screwed for complying with the law. Now, I continue to comply with the law but, after finding my gender situation, I have come out in favor. And if someone criticizes me, they may be committing a crime of transphobia." He added that when he changed his gender, his pension increased because Spanish women earn more in their retirement pension to compensate for inequality. He also is earning 15 percent more when having a child.

The self-declared "woman" is now enjoying the privilege of having a private room in the barracks, all to himself, with a private bathroom. "I cannot be with men, as I am a woman, and I did not consider it appropriate to be with biological women out of respect for them. I have only made room for myself since the sex change," Perdigones added. He is also free to turn up to military drills with long hair and to wear earrings. He pointed out the "benefits" of the sex change to have wider implications concerning his estranged 16-year-old son from a former relationship. "As a father, I haven't seen him since the child was three years old, but now I am no longer a father, now I am a non-pregnant mother. This means that I can fight on equal terms with the biological mother," he explained. "I am in the process of looking for a lawyer to recover what I have lost, always prioritizing the good of the minor."
The Trans Law for "real and effective equality for trans people" was passed by lawmakers on Dec. 22, 2022, and came into force in Spain on March 2, 2023, allowing a person to change their gender identity in the civil register without undergoing a two-year hormonal treatment or obtaining a medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria, as required by previous legislation. People between the ages of 14 and 16 need a parental or guardians’ agreement while children as young as 12 can go through the legal process of changing their gender identity, but their changes must be approved by a judge.
FRAUD: Military men take advantage of the LGBTQIA law
With all the perks and privileges that the Trans Law provides, without strict requirements, critics could not help but suspect a massive fraud being committed in the Spanish military right now.
Sources explain that since last year there have been a total of 49 sex changes in Ceuta. Eight of them have been from women who have transitioned to men, with the consequent change of name. They have gone from having female names to having male names.
The rest, 41 people, have gone from being men to being women. However, only four of this group have also changed their name. The rest, 37, have kept their male names. These people represent 75.5 percent of the total population that has resorted to the Trans Law, a particularly high figure.
They point out that the majority of these people are officials, members of the Army, the National Police, the Civil Guard and the Local Police of the autonomous city. Furthermore, they have an average age of between 40 and 50 years.
