The 77-year-old Trump voiced out support for such tests during a Sept. 17 interview with NBC News. He recounted to the outlet's Kristin Welker how he took a 10-minute mental evaluation while still occupying 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. According to Trump, the aforementioned test designed to screen for mild cognitive impairment or early dementia should be compulsory.
"I'm all for testing; I frankly think testing would be a good thing. I would be for testing … to make sure everyone's just fine," he told Welker. "A lot of people say it's not constitutional to do it. A lot of people say that can't happen because of the Constitution."
"You know, I took a test two years ago, three years ago. It was in front of doctors and a whole big deal at Walter Reed [National Military Medical Center], which is an incredible place. Trump's espousal of cognitive tests for presidential candidates appeared to be a subtle dig against 80-year-old current President Joe Biden, who is seeking a second term. The real estate mogul-turned-chief executive has been criticizing Biden's cognitive decline, given the incumbent president's multiple gaffes.
But Trump is not the only person who backs cognitive tests for potential candidates. Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who served as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations under Trump, also espoused such a view.
During her announcement of her candidacy in February, Haley stressed the need for generational change. Alongside this change, she called for mandatory competency tests for politicians aged 75 and older. Her comments were a subtle swipe at both her former boss and the current chief executive.
"In the America I see, the permanent politician will finally retire," said Haley. "We'll have term limits for Congress, and mandatory mental competency tests for politicians over 75 years old."
Trump: Biden's INCOMPETENCE is the issue, not his age
During the same NBC News interview, the former president expressed opposition to the idea of an age limit for candidates running for president. He also pointed out that the issue with Biden isn't his age, but his incompetence.
"I don't think Biden's too old," Trump said. "But I think he's incompetent, and that's a bigger problem. I'm not anywhere very near 80, by the way."
According to Trump, some of the greatest world leaders have been in their 80s. But in the case of Biden, this isn't necessarily true as he lacks the wisdom that made these older leaders memorable.
The former president also espoused this sentiment during an earlier interview with former Fox News host Megyn Kelly. He remarked during an appearance on her program "The Megyn Kelly Show" that Biden's age is not the issue, but his incompetence. Given this, Trump emphasized that Biden should not be given another four-year term.
"He's not too old. He's incompetent," Trump told Kelly. "Age is interesting, because some people are very sharp and some people do lose it, but you lose it at 40 and 50 also. But no, he's not too old at all. He's grossly incompetent."
When pressed by the host regarding why Biden's age isn't an issue, Trump recounted his many friends in their 80s and 90s who were as "sharp as a tack" despite their advanced age. He further hammered the point of the former Obama-era vice president's incompetence, saying: "But if you go back 25 years, he wasn't the sharpest tack either."
