MSNBC made the admission in a breaking news report. Citing the Washington Post, the report mentioned that federal agents have gathered "sufficient evidence" to charge Hunter with tax and gun purchase crimes. The investigation on the presidential son had been going on since 2018, according to the Post's national security reporter Devlin Barrett.
"Agents believe, and have believed for a number of months, they have a chargeable case against Hunter Biden," he said. According to Barrett, the tax charges against the presidential son stem from "allegedly failing to report significant amounts of income." The gun purchase issues, meanwhile, stem from Hunter lying about details in a form he filled out in connection with a firearm purchase.
"In 2018, when Hunter Biden bought a gun, he said he did not have a substance problem. He was not addicted to drugs when, in fact, in his own autobiography – he writes that he was using drugs quite significantly in that time period and since that, he's gotten clean and beaten that addiction."
Barrett, however, clarified that it remains "unclear" if the charges have anything to do with the controversial "laptop from hell."
"We can't tell at this point how important or unimportant the laptop has been to this federal investigation," Barrett said. "That's been the subject of a lot of political debate, and we know that the FBI has looked at that data. What we don't know yet is how important they think that data is to this case."
Chris Clark, an attorney for Hunter Biden, said in a statement: "It is a federal felony for a federal agent to leak information about a grand jury investigation such as this one," referring to the Post's report.
MSNBC reporter defends Hunter taking money from foreign governments
Prior to the MSM network admitting that Hunter Biden can and will be charged for federal crimes, one of its reporters defended the presidential son taking money from foreign governments. According to MSNBC justice reporter Ken Dilanian, Hunter taking money from foreign governments was legal because he did not hold any office in the federal government. "In terms of corruption [or] conflict of interest, we've never heard a hint that there were potential criminal charges there because Hunter Biden wasn't an officeholder. It was perfectly legal for him to take money from foreign governments as long as he wasn't inappropriately giving them information from his family or something," Dilanian explained. "There's no hint of that."
Nevertheless, the MSNBC reporter recognized that "as bad as it looks, we should all acknowledge [that] it looks terrible."
Former U.S. Attorney for the District of Utah Brett Tolman, however, is not buying any of it. He expressed skepticism over the charges, adding that the MSM was not looking at all the charges it could be looking at.
"So much of it doesn't make sense. It is a very awkward, clumsy story. Some of this doesn't add up," Tolman told Fox News host Martha MacCallum.
"The charges themselves, they talk about the lying and buying. Why would you bring that charge when you have him actually possessing the firearm? You would bring the possession of a firearm by a user of narcotics, instead of lying and buying, because it has a far greater punishment."
