Fauci was speaking at an interview event during the Atlantic Festival Tuesday. "It is likely, for a real complete regimen, that you would need at least a third dose," Fauci told Ed Yong.
Fauci's redefinition of vaccination to include the boosters contrasts with advice from 18 senior officials of the Food and Drug Administration, who have rejected the notion that the boosters will be necessary for the broader population through the release of a scientific report on the matter. The FDA officials recommended using the vaccine doses that would be used for boosters in poor countries with diminished access to the drug, recommending boosters for seniors and the immunocompromised as opposed to everyone.
"I've made it clear that my opinion has always been that I believe that a third-shot booster for a two-dose mRNA [vaccine] should ultimately and will ultimately be the proper, complete regimen," reiterated Fauci.
Scientific consensus suggests that a third booster shot can only serve to provide temporary protection from incurring the coronavirus. This contrasts with the purpose of the vaccine, which is designed to prevent infections of the disease from becoming severe to the point of hospitalization and death. Fauci defended the notion of medicine merely intended to prevent coronavirus infections, admitting that booster shots won't prevent the long-term possibility of hospitalization as the vaccines do.
"I think we should be preventing people from getting sick from COVID even if they don't wind up in the hospital."
The Biden administration has failed to contain a renewed outbreak of coronavirus, in spite of promises from the President as a candidate that he was uniquely capable of shutting down a pervasive disease.
With the public increasingly tired of constantly shifting public health "guidance" that does little too mitigate the disease, it's likely attempts to mandate booster shots for the general public will meet even further opposition than some of the most wide-ranging vaccine madnates.
