Dear God, help us: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez can’t name the three branches of government (hint: She was somehow elected to one of them)
11/20/2018 // JD Heyes // Views

As a legislator, Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez makes a pretty good activist, given that in the short time since she won her seat during the midterm elections earlier this month she’s already taken part in a climate change protest in the office of Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and a conference call with Justice Democrats, a group whose objective is to oust primary incumbent Democrats not seen as ‘Left-wing enough.’

Actual governing is going to be a much harder concept for her to grasp, however, as evidenced by the fact that a) she’s already fallen into the habit of upsetting the Democrat establishment and b) she can’t even name the three branches of government.

Speaking of that conference call with Justice Democrats over the weekend, Ocasio-Cortez actually told attendees, “If we work our butts off to make sure that we take back all three chambers of Congress — uh, rather, all three chambers of government: the presidency, the Senate, and the House.”

Watch the train wreck/dumpster fire:

Just. Wow.

If this doesn’t make her the poster child for why Civics 101 should be reintroduced into our public school system, then no one can be.

For the record, young lady, there are only two ‘chambers’ of Congress — the House (that would be the chamber you were elected to), and the Senate.

The presidency is its own ‘chamber’ — or, as it is correctly referred to, its own branch — of the three branches of our government. The other two are the Legislative Branch (that’s the one you belong to) and the Judicial Branch (think federal courts and the Supreme Court).

As if making the mistake wasn’t bad enough, The Daily Wire’s Ryan Saavedra noted that Ocasio-Cortez sought to draw more attention to her lack of civics knowledge by complaining about being corrected on Twitter.

What she doesn’t know is stunning

“Maybe instead of Republicans drooling over every minute of footage of me in slow-mo, waiting to chop up word slips that I correct in real tomd [sic], they actually step up enough to make the argument they want to make: that they don’t believe people deserve a right to healthcare,” she wrote. (Related: Even the ‘diverse’ Democratic Party isn’t diverse ENOUGH for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.)

What healthcare has to do with her lack of knowledge about our form of government (or Republicans in general) is known only to Ocasio-Cortez. But since she brought it up, we would challenge her to name a single Republican lawmaker who has actually come out publicly or privately and said, “Ya know, I don’t think Americans ought to have a right to healthcare.” Just one.

Most Republicans have been trying to make it so that more Americans have easier, more affordable access to healthcare, but thanks to the Democrat-passed Obamacare, that access is more limited and far more expensive than it ought to be. Maybe Ocasio-Cortez should address that issue.

Oh, wait. She did. “Medicare for all” — at a price tag north of $32 trillion over 10 years. Brilliant.

During her conference call, Ocasio-Cortez also demonstrated that she doesn’t understand another basic tenet of our system: That we’re a representative republic.

She told conference attendees that Justice Democrats members ought to run for office in their home districts to weed out establishment Democrats who are “demographically and ideologically out-of-touch with their districts.”

The U.S. Constitution provides that voters can elect someone who lives in their respective district to represent them in the House; it does not say that person must reflect the ‘demographics’ of the district, or even the political, cultural, and social ideologies of the people living there (though most often winning candidates do share a similar ideology with voters — otherwise they wouldn’t win).

This young upstart has much to learn about how our system really works. You’d think that she’d learn it before running for Congress.
