(NaturalNews) A member of the legacy media – let's not call it "mainstream" anymore because it's not; it's becoming irrelevant – took another hit recently, when readers of the new Alternative media reminded the newspaper serving the country's fourth-largest city just how insignificant it had become.
As reported by
Breitbart News, readers of the news site lashed out at the
Houston Chronicle after the paper
attacked Breitbart for an article that accurately described an Islamic Tribunal in Irving, Texas, in 2015. Specifically,
Breitbart reported, its readers "described the diminishing news outlet as [a] system to deliver coupons and not news."
One
Breitbart reader who responded under the username "Bloke" wrote, "People still read that rag? Thought everyone just got it for the coupons."
Another reader, "Beaux Weevil," said, "We gave up our subscription to the Houston Comical many years ago. Only had it for the sports page and the Sunday ads. Even those went to crap about ten years ago. Loony leftism was always its stock in trade. Crazy to think it's even still in business."
Errors, smears and lies
In addition, the paper may have lost even more support and readership after Breitbart's Texas managing director, Brandon Darby, called them out about
a dishonest story regarding top-tier
GOP presidential contender and U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas. Eventually, the Chronicle corrected its report, but that happened without the paper's editors actually publicly acknowledging the correction.
In addition,
Breitbart noted, there have been ethical issues at the paper as well.
The Chronicle's Joe Holley, for instance,
claimed erroneously that
True the Vote founder Catherine Engelbrecht was under investigation by the Department of Justice. Holley admitted in an email that neither he nor the paper actually knew if the smear was accurate, but they had "heard it somewhere."
Oh.
As before, the
paper corrected its blatant and irresponsible smear, but did so without acknowledgement. And, of course, its editors never bothered to apologize to Engelbrecht – a conservative – for the smear.
Other
Breitbart readers chimed in with their discontent of the
Chronicle and its bad behavior:
TheWarIsHere wrote, "Looks to me like the liars at the Chronicle are the bigger threat to the Republic."
Samantha Brown noted, "The
Houston Chronicle is a liberal hack job, that is only good for lining a bird cage!!"
Pollybmc responded to Samantha Brown's post writing
, "I once told a guy peddling that rag that my husband wouldn't allow it in the house and that if we did have a bird, he wouldn't allow it in it's cage. The
Houston Chronicle is the biggest joke of a paper. A city the size of Houston needs a decent newspaper. Until then, I get my news elsewhere."
Of course, the
Chronicle's inaccurate reporting and Left-wing bias is typical among the dying breed of daily print newspapers. Tens of millions of readers no longer bother with subscribing to them, leaving many starving for advertisers, laying off staff and shuttering operations altogether.
'Lamestream' media is dying
Some have regained a bit of ground by putting their entire operations online, but they continue to be a shell of their former existence in their heydays, when they didn't have any competition and the news business was dominated by a single political ideology.
As
The Economic Collapse Blog reported in May 2014, the
mainstream media is a dinosaur:
"Ratings at CNN, MSNBC and Fox News have all been plummeting in recent years, and newspaper ad revenues are about a third of what they were back in the year 2000."
