Odd, colorful clouds on Mars spotted by NASA’s Curiosity rover

Clouds are typically found floating at the planet's equator in the coldest time of the year when the Red Planet is farthest from the sun. But one Martian year ago (two Earth years), scientists noticed clouds forming over Curiosity earlier than they expected. So NASA instructed the rover this year to watch for "early" clouds.

Clouds did appear starting in late January. They were spread out in rippled and sometimes colorful patterns in the dry, thin atmosphere of Mars.

Researchers at California State Polytechnic University Pomona report this in a Sept. 27 study published in Astrobiology. They note that photosynthesis occurs all day on Venus – even at night – because of the thermal energy levels on the planet's surface and in its atmosphere. The presence of light energy above and below the clouds allow microorganisms to live in different cloud layers.

Scientists discover new evidence of liquid water on Mars

The University of Cambridge-led study provided the first independent evidence that uses data aside from radar that there is liquid water beneath the south polar ice cap of the Red Planet.

"This study gives the best indication yet that there is liquid water on Mars today because it means that two of the key pieces of evidence we would look for when searching for subglacial lakes on Earth have now been found on Mars," said Dr. Frances Butcher, second author of the study ...

In the image, a sea of windswept sand dunes could be seen stretched out across the Martian surface. But instead of looking at the Red Planet's trademark orange color, the dunes were tinged with a mix of gold and blue. As it turned out, the thermal image was digitally colored to highlight the wide-ranging temperatures there. Areas tinted in blue represent colder regions while warmer areas were tinted in orange and yellow, NASA said in a statement.
