Survey: 63% of small business owners no longer hiring because they cannot afford added costs

Online small business network Alignable released on Sept. 7 the results of a survey it conducted. It found that a surprising 63 percent of small businesses cannot afford to hire more personnel, even when new employees are needed. What's worse is that 10 percent of small businesses said they are actually laying off workers – a six percent hike from July.

The Alignable survey was conducted from May 10 to July 19, polling 5,350 small business owners....

These numbers were based from a recent Alignable Research Center poll. For comparison, 45 percent of small businesses had hiring freeze and four percent fired employees in July.

A total of 5,618 small business employers participated in the poll from Aug. 13 to Sept. 6. About 60 percent of the entrepreneurs said freezing hiring and firing their employees were inevitable as labor costs are at least 50 percent higher than they were pre-Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) ...

According to its latest report, 37 percent of American small business owners were unable to pay rent on time or in full in October. This is up from 30 percent of small business owners who said the same in September. This is also the highest percentage of rent delinquency among small business owners this year. A record 4.3 million workers quit their jobs in August because of unemployment benefits and vaccine mandates

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which compiled the data, the quit rate for August jumped to 2.9 percent. This translates to an extra 242,000 workers quitting their jobs. That month's quit rate is the highest in the bureau's data series, which goes all the way back to Dec. 2020.

The quit rate for the previous month was 2.7 percent, which suggests that more and more people are leaving their jobs.

The Eviction Lab at Princeton University said in August that evictions were 52 percent above average in Tampa, 90 percent above average in Houston and 94 percent above average in Minneapolis-St. Paul.
