Sen. Daschle's Tax Blunders Reveal Elitist Mentality among Washington LawmakersBy Mike Adams, February 2, 2009 | Key concepts: Senator Daschle, Income tax and IRS Sen. Tom Daschle admitted today that he failed to pay more than $120,000 in taxes to the IRS. Oops. Another slip on the pen, huh? It's just the latest in a long line of elitist lawmakers caught breaking the very rules they would throw ordinary citizens in jail for breaking. The point is this: The Little People (that would be you and I) are threatened with imprisonment if we don't follow these rules, but the elitists in Washington flout them as a matter of practice. And when they get caught, they get off with an apology instead of arrest and prosecution. The message from Washington D.C. is clear: Don't do what we do, do what we say! (And we'll do our own thing behind closed doors, just to keep the wealthy elite wealthy and elite.) Of course, this whole issue also screams out for tax reform. If a U.S. Senator can't figure out the tax code (if you believe that explanation, anyway), how is Joe Six Pack supposed to do the math on his own tax returns? The tax code is a God-awful mess that's virtually indecipherable by any human, no matter what their level of education. That's why no two accountants ever agree on how much tax a citizen actually owes at the end of the year -- and they're the tax professionals! Perhaps Sen. Daschle should sponsor real tax reform this year, calling it the "Tax reform that's so simple even Sen. Daschle can understand it!" He could start with a tax simplification program that would allow all Americans to calculate taxes on a single sheet of paper. Or why not just eliminate the income tax altogether and go to a consumption tax with a rebate back to the People to prevent the consumption tax from become regressive? There's a lot of debate over the merits of a Flat Tax vs. the National Sales Tax, but one thing for sure is that almost any tax system beats the current system, which even U.S. Senators can't figure out. You're still required to read the entire U.S. tax code, as a private citizen, because ignorance of the law is no excuse. (Becoming a Senator, however, is a valid excuse.) Click to read: |
