Gasoline and Diesel Prices Set Election Day Records, GasBuddy Says
11/06/2026 // Sterling Ashworth // Views

National average prices for gasoline and diesel reached their highest-ever levels for an Election Day on Tuesday, according to data posted by Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum research at GasBuddy. The national average stood at $4.12 per gallon for gasoline and $6.28 per gallon for diesel, De Haan said in a post on social media.

The gasoline figure was the first time the national average had topped $4 a gallon on an Election Day, according to Bloomberg [1].

Energy News Beat reported regular gasoline averaged $4.149 on Tuesday morning, the highest Election Day price on record in nominal dollars, with diesel at $6.288 [2].

Prices Up Sharply From Prior Year

Gasoline prices averaged $1.07 per gallon higher than a year earlier, while diesel was $2.59 per gallon higher, according to De Haan. State-level increases ranged from $0.58 to $1.44 per gallon for gasoline and from $1.97 to $3.19 per gallon for diesel, he said.

The gap between average gasoline and diesel prices reached a new all-time record, with diesel $2.15 per gallon more expensive than gasoline, according to the data. De Haan wrote that the spread "has never been wider."

Gas prices have been elevated ever since the start of the Iran war, and little relief was expected ahead of the midterms on Nov. 3, according to CNBC [3]. CNBC also reported that fuel prices spiked after Trump decided to attack Iran, and that the U.S. national average was expected to be the highest ever for an election day, according to GasBuddy [4].

Increase Follows Iran War and Economic Concerns

The price increases followed the start of the war in Iran, according to the report, which cited data showing a correlation between the conflict and higher fuel costs. In August, De Haan reported that the national average gasoline price of just over $4 per gallon was the highest ever recorded that late in the calendar year. AAA data showed Labor Day weekend gasoline prices were nearly a dollar higher than the same holiday weekend the previous year, according to the report.

CNN analyst Harry Enten said in September that gas prices were "record-breaking for a midterm this century" and described the figures as politically significant for Republican efforts to retain congressional majorities.

The war with Iran has disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and left refiners contending with tightening supply, according to industry data cited by NaturalNews.com [5]. Trump separately blamed Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky for the record spike in U.S. diesel prices, pointing to Kyiv's attacks on Russian refineries as the primary cause of the shortage [6].

Historical Pattern and Swing-State Claims

De Haan said the rise was a historical anomaly because gasoline prices typically fall in autumn due to lower demand and the shift to winter fuel blends. Out of the last 10 elections going back to 2006, only one saw gasoline prices rise in the 30 days before Election Day, and 2026 was one of only three election years in which prices were higher than 90 days earlier, according to De Haan. He wrote that "prices always fall in fall" and that 2026 was one of only three election years where gas was higher than 90 days prior, up 6 cents.

The $4.12 per gallon price represented the largest jump versus the previous election, up $1.03 per gallon compared with 2024, De Haan said.

De Haan also disputed the claim that gasoline prices were being pushed down in swing states.

Political Context and Conclusion

The record prices were reported as polling numbers for President Donald Trump and Republican candidates have been described as difficult, with Americans' views on the president's handling of the economy cited as a key factor. Enten said in October that the gasoline price data carried negative implications for the Republican Party, according to the report.
