An Illinois mother has filed a civil rights complaint with the U.S. Department of Justice, alleging that school administrators attempted to force her 13-year-old daughter to change in front of a transgender student in the girls' locker room.
Nicole Georgas, the mother who brought the issue to light during a Deerfield Public Schools District 109 Board of Education meeting on March 13, reported that the incident happened on Feb. 5, when her daughter was using the girls' bathroom and noticed a transgender student, a biological male who identifies as female, also using the facility.
According to Georgas, her daughter felt "frightened" and "extremely upset" by the situation. When the girl raised concerns with school administrators, she was allegedly told that the transgender student was permitted to use the girls' bathroom and locker room because they identified as female. The situation escalated days later when Georgas' daughter and several classmates refused to change into their physical education uniforms in the presence of the transgender student. Georgas alleged that school administrators, including Assistant Superintendent for Student Services Joanna Ford and Assistant Principal Cathy Van Treese, intervened by entering the locker room and instructing the girls to change.
Georgas claimed that this occurred multiple times over a week, though her daughter continued to refuse to participate.
"This sets such a dangerous precedent for girls everywhere by allowing men into safe places. My biggest concern is that an adult, biological male, who hasn't transitioned, can freely access women's bathrooms [and] locker rooms, putting their safety and privacy at risk. This is common sense," she said in a separate statement when she appeared on "America Reports."
Georgas also claimed that the school's actions directly contradict President Donald Trump's executive order, "Keeping Men out of Women's Sports," which restricts transgender individuals from participating in sports aligned with their gender identity.
"This doesn't have to be long. It's all about common sense," Trump said before signing the order in February, adding that "women's sports will be only for women." He then declared that "the war on women's sports is over."
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized the importance of the order during a briefing, stating that it "upholds the promise of Title IX," the federal law prohibiting sex-based discrimination in education and athletics.
"President Trump pledged to restore common sense to our country and he’s continuing to deliver on that with an executive order that he will sign later today," she said. "The president will be signing an executive order, keeping men out of women's sports to defend the safety of athletes, protect competitive integrity and uphold the promise of Title IX."
But despite Trump's executive order, the school administration reportedly informed Georgas that, under the guidance of their legal counsel, the transgender student is still allowed to use girls' facilities.
