In September 1950, the U.S. Navy conducted a covert biological warfare experiment off the coast of San Francisco, releasing massive amounts of Serratia marcescens and Bacillus atrophaeus into the air. At the time, the Navy believed the bacteria were harmless, but the experiment had dire consequences.
Eleven people were hospitalized with rare, severe urinary tract infections, and one man, Edward Nevin, died from complications linked to the bacteria. The incident, which was kept secret for decades, has since become a cautionary tale about the risks of unchecked scientific experimentation.
Now, nearly 75 years later, the recent fog has stirred memories of Operation Sea Spray, with some speculating that the government may be conducting similar tests.
"Guys, they dumped a bunch of microbes on the country this week, in the form of fog," one X user posted. Another asked, "Did we just suffer another Operation Sea Spray event - The Fog?"
Health concerns and social media frenzy
Reports of the fog have emerged from states across the U.S., including Texas, Florida, Kansas and Minnesota, as well as parts of Canada and the United Kingdom.
A Florida resident told the Daily Mail that after stopping at a gas station for 10 minutes, they began sneezing uncontrollably and experienced puffy eyes, fever-like warmth and stomach cramps.
"Within about an hour, I kept sneezing over and over for about three hours and my eyes were really puffy," they said.
A California resident shared on X: "Here in SoCal, unusual fog the last few days. Strange smells, but I've been noticing the smell for months now, burns my nose. Seems like an all-out assault from the skies the last few days."
Similar accounts have fueled speculation that the fog could be a chemical weapon or linked to recent drone sightings across the country.
Despite the widespread concern, meteorologists and atmospheric scientists have offered natural explanations for the fog. The NWS issued dense fog advisories for multiple states, attributing the phenomenon to typical winter weather patterns. Fog forms when the temperature cools to the dew point, causing water vapor to condense into tiny droplets suspended in the air. The current fog is likely advection fog, which occurs when warm, moist air flows over colder land, a common occurrence in the southern and central U.S. during winter.
The "white particles" seen in the fog are also easily explained. When light shines through the fog, it scatters off the water droplets, making them appear as visible particles. As for the "chemical" smell, experts note that fog can absorb and trap pollutants near the Earth's surface like car exhaust and industrial emissions.
"When fog forms, sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides and other polluting gases are taken up or 'scavenged' by fog water droplets," explained Rudolf Husar, a Washington University atmospheric scientist, in an article for NASA Earth Observatory.
The respiratory symptoms reported by some individuals are consistent with the effects of natural fog, particularly when mixed with pollutants. Studies have shown that fog can irritate the respiratory system, causing coughing, shortness of breath, and congestion, especially in people with asthma. A bit of "Operation Sea Spray" history" here:
Yes. back in the day (early 1950s) there really was a bacteriological related military project (legal research at that time) to ascertain the effects of aerial dispersion of a bacteria into the atmosphere. The two bacteria strains employed, Serratia marcescens and Bacillus globigii, were, at the time, considered to be inert in terms of infectious disease potential. At least Serratia has since been identified as a risk to the medically compromised population. The plan was to monitor for the bacteria spread, both within human populations and in the environment the San Francisco Bay Area.
BTW, the experiments were not conducted by the U.S. Navy. They were part of a series of field tests conducted by the Army's Chemical Corps to determine the vulnerability of targets to biological weapons.
There was only one documented project related death discovered in the bay area due to a Serratia pulmonary infection, he was a debilitated nursing home resident.
