Trump officially endorses Mike Johnson for House Speaker
01/02/2025 // Laura Harris // Views

  • President-elect Donald Trump has fully endorsed Mike Johnson as the Republican candidate for House Speaker.
  • Trump's endorsement is seen as a strategic effort to unify the Republican Party and secure the speakership for Johnson, despite potential opposition from up to ten Republicans.
  • Johnson thanked the president-elect and pledged to swiftly implement the "America First agenda," aiming to usher in a "new golden age of America."
  • The fight for the speakership could potentially delay the passage of Trump's agenda due to the Republican Party's slim majority in the House. Additionally, the resignations of key members like Matt Gaetz and Mike Waltz will further reduce the majority.
  • Rep. Mike Lawler and Rep. Matt Gaetz raised concerns that certification of Trump's 2024 win could be delayed without a Speaker.

President-elect Donald Trump has thrown his "complete" and "total" support behind Republican candidate for House Speaker Mike Johnson a few days before the crucial vote on Jan. 3.

In a post on Truth Social on Dec. 30, Trump emphasized the importance of the party's "common sense" agenda and warned against squandering the opportunity that lies ahead.

"We ran a flawless campaign, having spent FAR LESS, with lots of money left over. They ran a very expensive 'sinking ship,' embracing DOJ and FBI WEAPONIZATION against their political opponent, ME. BUT IT DIDN'T WORK, IT WAS A DISASTER!!!" Trump wrote. "LET'S NOT BLOW THIS GREAT OPPORTUNITY WHICH WE HAVE BEEN GIVEN."

In line with this, Trump praised Johnson, describing him as a "good, hard-working and religious man" who will "do the right thing" and help "continue to WIN."

"The American people need IMMEDIATE relief from all of the destructive policies of the last Administration. Speaker Mike Johnson is a good, hard-working, religious man," Trump posted that day. "He will do the right thing, and we will continue to WIN. Mike has my complete and total endorsement. MAGA!!!"

This endorsement is seen as a strategic move to unify the Republican Party and secure the speakership for Johnson, who faces an uphill battle with anywhere from four to ten Republicans expected to oppose him. Republican lawmakers: Without a speaker, Trump's certification of 2024 victory would be delayed

Johnson, in response to Trump's endorsement, thanked the president-elect and pledged to "quickly deliver on your America First agenda and usher in the new golden age of America."

"Thank you, President Trump! I’m honored and humbled by your support, as always," he posted on his official account on X, formerly known as Twitter, that same day. "Together, we will quickly deliver on your America First agenda and usher in the new golden age of America. The American people demand and deserve that we waste no time. Let's get to work!"

However, the potential fight for a new Speaker could delay the passage of Trump's agenda, given Republicans' razor-thin majority in the House. The majority will also be reduced with the expected resignations of Rep. Matt Gaetz, who was nominated for attorney general, and Rep. Mike Waltz, who is set to become Trump's national security advisor. Rep. Elise Stefanik is also expected to leave Congress to serve as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) raised concerns that without a speaker, certification of Trump's 2024 win could be delayed. Rep. Matt Gaetz echoed a similar statement on X.

"We could never have held up McCarthy two years ago for concessions if a Trump certification hung in the balance. Now, it does," Gaetz also wrote on X, adding that resistance to Johnson is "now futile." So instead of resisting, Gaetz called for the public to work together. "Let's work to make him the best version of himself (which was more like the 2023 vintage of Mike)," he said.
