Donald Trump nominates Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as HHS secretary, giving him control over the FDA, CDC, NIH and other agencies

President-elect Donald Trump has announced his intention to nominate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to be the head of his Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

The decision to pick Kennedy, who Big Pharma has lambasted for years as an "anti-vaccine activist," is expected to "roil" many so-called public health experts, wrote Meridith McGraw and Chelsea Cirruzzo for Politico. "I am thrilled to announce Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as the United States Secretary of Health and Human Services," said Trump in his statement announcing Kennedy's nomination. "For too long, Americans have been crushed by the industrial food complex and drug companies who have engaged in deception, misinformation and disinformation when it comes to public health."

"The safety and health of all Americans is the most important role of any administration, and HHS will play a big role in helping ensure that everybody will be protected from harmful chemicals, pollutants, pesticides, pharmaceutical products and food additives that have contributed to the overwhelming health crisis in this country," he continued.

In a statement thanking Trump for nominating him, Kennedy stated he is excited to work with the employees of HHS and to "free" the department and the agencies under its purview "from the smothering cloud of corporate capture so they can pursue their mission to make Americans once again the healthiest people on Earth."

"Together, we will clean up corruption, stop the revolving door between industry and government, and return our health agencies to their rich tradition of gold-standard, evidence-based science," said Kennedy. "I will provide Americans with transparency and access to all the data so they can make informed choices for themselves and their families."

Congress could torpedo Kennedy's nomination

Congressional Democrats have predictably expressed their opposition to Kennedy's nomination, with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries stating that, while it is up to the Senate to confirm or reject Kennedy's nomination, he is "skeptical" that Trump made the right choice.

"Is [Kennedy] the best qualified person in the United States of America to lead us forward as we grapple with an enormous amount of health challenges in this country? The answer is clearly he is not," he said.

Senate President Pro Tempore Patty Murray (D-WA), the third highest-ranking Democrat in the Senate, claimed that Kennedy's confirmation would be "nothing short of a disaster for the health of millions of families."

"There's no telling how far an anti-vaxxer and fringe conspiracy theorist like RFK Jr. could set America back in terms of public health, reproductive rights, research and more," wrote Murray on X, formerly Twitter. "And the consequences are not theoretical – they're life or death issues."

"Mr. Kennedy's outlandish views on basic scientific facts are disturbing and should worry all parents who expect schools and other public spaces to be safe for their children," claimed Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR).

Notably, many Republicans are also refusing to comment on Kennedy's nomination. Only a few, like Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), publicly supported Trump's pick, posting on X: "Bad day for Big Pharma! @RobertKennedyJr."

Most, however, including incoming Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) have refused to speak about Kennedy's nomination, claiming that they would reserve judgment on him until the hearings begin.

"I don't have any preconceived notion about it," said Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), who added that Kennedy will be treated like all other nominees.
