32% of American voters say illegal immigration should be Trump’s top priority when he takes office

A new Rasmussen Reports survey has revealed that 32 percent of American voters say illegal immigration should be the top priority of President-elect Donald Trump when he takes office in January.

The poll, conducted right before the election from Oct. 30 to Nov. 3, asked 1,800 likely voters to identify the most important issue for the next president to address, choosing between abortion rights, illegal immigration, rising prices and protecting democracy. (Related: POLL: More voters trust Donald Trump over Kamala Harris on immigration policy and border security.)

Thirty percent of voters identified illegal immigration as the most important issue they want the incoming administration to focus on, outpacing the fight against rising prices (27 percent), protecting democracy (24 percent) and far beyond abortion rights which only got 14 percent support.

Based on political affiliations, nearly half of Republicans (49 percent) rated illegal immigration as the top issue, followed by rising prices at 30 percent. Democrats, on the other hand, prioritized protecting democracy (33 percent) and abortion rights (25 percent) above other issues. Meanwhile, independent voters were equally divided between prioritizing illegal immigration and rising prices at 31 percent each.

Age demographics also show distinct shifts in priorities. Younger voters under 40 were more inclined to view rising prices as the most pressing issue, while those aged 65 and older placed illegal immigration as the most pressing issue for them.

Trump reassures Americans that illegal immigration will be one of his priorities in January

During his campaign rallies, Trump promised American voters that he would conduct "the largest domestic deportation operation in American history" if he were reelected as president.

"Upon my inauguration, I will immediately terminate every Open Borders policy of the Biden administration. Following the Eisenhower Model, we will carry out the largest domestic deportation operation in American History," Trump vowed during a speech in Iowa. "I'll also invoke immediately the Alien Enemies Act to remove all known or suspected gang members."

Trump also declared in one of his campaign speeches that he would address border security as one of the most important issues to the American people especially now that the U.S. immigration system has been at its worst under the administration of President Joe Biden.

And now that he won the presidential election, Trump reassured the public that illegal immigration would be one of his first priorities upon taking office.

In an NBC News interview on Nov. 7, Trump said he would make the border "strong and powerful." He also reiterated his promise to conduct the largest mass deportation of undocumented immigrants in American history despite its logistical and financial implications.

"It's not a question of a price tag. It's not — really, we have no choice," said the president-elect. "When people have [been] killed and murdered, when drug lords have destroyed countries and now they're going to go back to those countries because they're not staying here. There is no price tag."

Trump has partially credited his messaging on immigration as one of the main reasons he won the race, saying: "They want to have borders, and they like people coming in, but they have to come in with love for the country. They have to come in legally."
