Report: Up to 25% of Israeli reservists refusing summons to rejoin the military amid fears of “endless” deployments

The number of Israelis reporting for service in the Israeli Defense Forces' (IDF) reserve units has declined significantly, especially among the group of Israelis who have already served in combat in Gaza and Lebanon.

This is according to a report by Israeli news outlet Ynet on Monday, Nov. 11, which revealed that the number of reservists showing up to serve in the IDF has declined since the 100 percent that used to appear during the opening months of the conflict in 2023. (Related: Israeli soldiers suffering from PTSD, with many resorting to self-harm and suicide.)

At the time, the report notes that the IDF's reserve units were all packed and even reservists who were not called up were volunteering to rejoin the army and fight in Gaza.

The number of soldiers reporting for service has decreased to between 75 to 85 percent in recent weeks.

The reserve soldiers will have to serve no less than 100 days next year, according to a senior security official. "The resource of reservists is not unlimited, and it is very difficult for people to be so absent in the midst of daily life. That is why there is a silent refusal to report for service, without protests or in a public way. They cannot be argued with, or demanded by force to come," a source from the military told Ynet.

IDF calls up reservists with ZERO notice

Several Israeli reservists have also expressed their resentment in returning for combat service.

"My battalion was called to a reserve order at the end of September, which was supposed to be limited in time, and two days after we were recruited, the order was opened until further notice," said reserve soldier Yonatan Kidor during a speech before the Knesset, the Israeli parliament.

"We were supposed to be released two weeks ago already, and right now, we are in the reserves without end … we and our families on the home front are being worn out," continued Kidor. "There are brigades that serve 300 to 350 days in a row. There is no end on the horizon, no future and no trust. End this war in some way."

Security officials have also warned that funding has not yet been acquired to keep paying the financial packages reservists earned last year, which totaled tens of thousands of shekels for each officer.

Ynet also mentioned the disrespect for the reserve soldiers is shown by the Israeli military's ongoing use of "Open Order 8," which permits the IDF to call up any reservist with zero notice.

The order is supposed to be employed only during emergency situations when a war engulfs Israel out of nowhere. There was clear justification to use Open Order 8 in the first few months of the conflict, but it has now been regularly utilized for the past 14 months.
