In an interview with the Jerusalem Post, extremist Israeli politician Amichai Chikli, head of the Ministry of Diaspora Affairs and Combating Antisemitism, noted that it is heavily monitoring anti-Israel and so-called antisemitic content spreading through social media networks. He added that the government is maintaining constant correspondence with social media executives, especially those of TikTok.
Chikli claimed that the platform has been "particularly problematic" since Oct. 7, 2023, the beginning of Israel's conflict in Gaza. He said he repeatedly reached out to the platform's leaders to take down allegedly antisemitic content.
"TikTok is better now than it was 10 months ago, but there is still a lot of work to do [regarding social media networks], especially on X [formerly Twitter]," said Chikli.
Chikli's ministry is mostly focused on the global Jewish diaspora and on incentivizing Jews to perform the aliyah, or to immigrate to Israel. In January 2023, the ministry was modified to also focus on combating antisemitism globally, leading to accusations that the ministry is being used as a means of politicizing antisemitism by only focusing on antisemitism coming from liberals and left-wingers.
Recent events in the United States have given this accusation some credence. In his interview, Chikli admitted that his ministry helped lobby Canada and the United States to ban Samidoun, an international pro-Palestinian organization that focuses on providing aid to Palestinians imprisoned by Israel.
He admitted that his ministry is also lobbying both countries to ban other pro-Palestinian and left-wing groups like Students for Justice in Palestine, a pro-Palestinian human rights student activist organization active in the U.S., Canada and New Zealand.
Chikli claimed it is "not true, it's not accurate" that his ministry only focuses on combating antisemitism from the left. To prove this, he admitted that his ministry is also focused on combating antisemitism from conservatives, he admitted that the ministry closely monitors "anti-Israel influencers," naming Bilzerian, Owens and Carlson as notable conservative antisemites. Speaking of Bilzerian, Chikli noted how his ministry found it suspicious that, in recent months, he has "all of a sudden [become] an Islam promoter."
"All of a sudden, he has changed the narrative," said Chikli. "He is speaking about the Quran and Islam and the State of Israel."
Chikli went on to claim that Bilzerian, Owens and Carlson may be being paid by Qatar to produce anti-Israel propaganda.
"[There might be] a Qatari effort behind some of these influencers and the changes they have made in their opinions," said Chikli. "I have said from the beginning of the war: The cooperation with Qatar regarding the hostages is a grave mistake because Qatar should have been pressed first and foremost by the Americans and also by Israel to pay the price for their support of Hamas."
"I don't see Qatar as a friendly state," he concluded. "I don't see Qatar as a fair mediator in negotiations. Qatar is an enemy state."
