In an interview with Fox News anchor Brett Baier, Harris faced tough questions about the cases of 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray, 22-year-old Laken Riley and 37-year-old Rachel, all of whom were brutally assaulted and killed by illegal immigrants. Baier then asked Harris if she regrets overturning the Trump administration policy which required illegal migrants to be detained through the deportation process. Baier also asked Harris if she felt she "owed these families an apology?"
Harris acknowledged the tragedies but declined to directly link the policies of the Biden-Harris administration to the surge in illegal immigration and the associated crimes. Instead, she insisted that the Biden administration attempted to pass a border security bill, which she claimed was blocked by Republicans. In short, she blamed Trump for the killings.
"I will tell you that I am so sorry for her loss," Harris said, even after watching the video of Nungaray's mother blaming the administration. "I'm so sorry for her loss, sincerely. But let's talk about what is happening right now with an individual who does not want to participate in solutions. Let's talk about that as well, Bret." In turn, Patty, the mother of Rachel, quickly slammed Harris for her statement.
"Vice President Harris had one job, secure our border, and she fell asleep at the switch," Patty said. "Her apology is hollow to us and all the other families that have been victims of illegal immigrant crime. The fact is, the Biden-Harris Administration rolled back border policies that would have prevented a flood of illegal immigrants, including the man who murdered my daughter. Rachel would still be alive today if they had taken action. It is too late for words. We need accountability, not excuses."
Rachel, a 37-year-old mother of six, was found dead on a Maryland hiking trail last year. Her accused killer, 23-year-old Victor Martinez Hernandez, an immigrant from El Salvador, entered the United States in February 2023. He is also linked to a prior murder in his home country and is accused of assaulting a nine-year-old girl and her mother in Los Angeles before Rachel's murder.
"Vice President Harris swore an oath to protect Americans when she took office, but she failed—not only in her duty but in her moral responsibility to safeguard the lives of those she promised to defend, leaving families like ours shattered and betrayed," Patty continued. "She allowed my daughter's alleged killer to enter this country, and now countless American families will suffer unending pain as the result of illegal immigrant crimes. She has had three and a half years of opportunities to make a difference, and now she's asking for more time to keep failing at the job she's already neglected for too long."
