Vance made this pledge multiple times during the recent vice presidential debate against his opponent, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.
"Donald Trump delivered for the American people rising wages, rising take-home pay, an economy that works for normal Americans, a secure southern border, a lot of things, frankly, that I didn't think he'd be able to deliver on," said Vance. He added that when "Donald Trump was president, inflation was low, take-home pay was higher, and he saved the very [healthcare] program from a Democratic administration that was collapsing and would have collapsed absent his leadership."
Trump's running mate discussed wages and pay more than 10 times during the debate on Tuesday night, Oct. 1. Commentators and analysts noted that this is a remarkable change from his previous speeches during campaign rallies, in which Vance, much like other Democrats and Republicans, refused to discuss providing higher incomes to citizens in exchange for their votes.
While Walz did not mention wages and pay much, he did promise to provide more federal aid to citizens through government agencies, tax payments and nonprofit organizations.
For instance, Walz promoted the Democrats' plans for childcare by stating, "Once that child is born, like in Minnesota, they get [government-funded] meals, they get [government-funded] early-childhood education, they get [government-funded] health care."
Vance, on the other hand, promised that Trump's trade policy would increase Americans' pay for whatever purposes they choose.
"Think about this, if you're trying to employ slave laborers in China at $3 a day, you're going to do that and undercut the wages of American workers – unless our country stands up for itself and says you're not accessing our markets unless you're paying middle-class Americans a fair wage," Vance said.
Vance went on to say that immigration enforcement "will be really good for our workers who just want to earn a fair wage for doing a good day's work."
Trump's tax cuts will increase salaries
During the debate, Vance also discussed Trump's plan to pass tax cuts, which he said will increase salaries. He noted how Trump's major tax cut during his first term gave middle-class and working-class Americans higher take-home pay.
"Donald Trump's economic policies [delivered] the highest take-home pay in a generation in this country, 1.5 percent inflation, and to boot, peace and security all over the world," Vance added. (Related: Trump vows to fight inflation and cut energy costs if reelected.)
He further said Trump's policies will also reduce housing costs for the American people and pointed out that presently housing in America is unaffordable because millions of illegal immigrants have been brought in to compete with Americans for scarce homes.
Vance did not particularly cite wages for white-collar Americans, although those salaries are also losing value because of immigration, housing, taxes and trade policy.
Meanwhile, in comments made after the debate, Trump said Walz "embarrassed himself," while Vance's performance "reconfirmed" his choice to make the Ohio senator his running mate.
"J.D. was fantastic last night – it just reconfirmed my choice. There was a brilliance to what he did," Trump said in an interview with Fox News Digital on Wednesday, Oct. 2.
The former president and Republican presidential nominee added that Walz "embarrassed himself and the Democrat Party last night but was made to look even worse by J.D.'s brilliant performance."
