The 58-year-old shooter pleaded innocent on Sept. 30 during his appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Bruce E. Reinhart of the Southern District of Florida. The Monday hearing saw Routh appear before the court to answer the charges filed against him concerning his assassination attempt on Trump.
"Routh … wore a beige inmate's outfit with a dark brown undershirt," NBC News reported. "[He] sported black, thick-rimmed glasses and was clean-shaven, in stark contrast with the white beard he had at his earlier detention heating. Routh … was escorted into court by a U.S. marshal wearing a suit and black gloves."
During Routh's less-than-five-minute appearance before Reinhart, he gestured toward reporters and audience members by pantomiming, scribbling on a notepad and then pointing to himself. The magistrate read the charges and asked if Routh understood, with the 58-year-old answering in the affirmative. Routh's defense attorneys waived an official reading of the charges, entered the not-guilty plea and requested a jury trial.
Federal prosecutors indicted Routh on five counts, alleging that he "did intentionally attempt to kill … Trump, a major presidential candidate." Aside from the one count of attempted assassination, he was also indicted with one count of assaulting a federal officer and three other weapons violations. According to the news outlet, Routh "could spend the rest of his life behind bars if he is convicted on all counts."
Routh offers $150k "to whoever can complete the job"
According to the indictment, a Secret Service agent noticed the muzzle of Routh's firearm while he was hiding in the bushes at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. The agent fired upon the would-be assassin, prompting Routh to flee in a black car. A concerned citizen managed to take pictures of Routh's getaway vehicle's license plate, allowing law enforcement to apprehend him.
The National Pulse previously reported that Routh appears to have extensive ties to individuals in Ukraine, Afghanistan and Iran. Aside from this disclosure, a months-old letter penned by Routh announced a six-figure bounty for anyone successful enough to take out the real estate mogul. According to the New York Post, Routh also admitted in the letter that the rhetoric used by Democrats inspired his failed attempt to kill Trump.
"This was an assassination attempt on Trump, but I failed you," Routh's letter reads. "I tried my best and gave it all the gumption I could muster. It is up to you now to finish the job, and I will offer $150,000 to whoever can complete the job." The Post also mentioned that Routh's trial has been randomly assigned to U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon, who also handles Trump's classified documents case. In July, she dismissed criminal charges against the former president filed by Special Counsel Jack Smith. Cannon argued at the time that Smith's appointment as special counsel by the Department of Justice violated the Constitution.
Aside from Cannon, Reinhart is another magistrate with ties to Trump. He was the judge who approved the 2022 search warrant that authorized the Federal Bureau of Investigation to raid the former president's Mar-a-Lago home in Florida. The raid resulted in the classified documents case pursued by Smith, which Cannon now oversees.
Routh's Sept. 15 attempt on Trump's life was the second one the former president survived. In July, Thomas Matthew Crooks fired a bullet in Trump's direction – but only grazed his right ear. Law enforcement neutralized Crooks moments after he pulled the trigger.
