The president held his first Cabinet meeting in over 11 months on Friday, Sept. 20, since his first Cabinet meeting on Oct. 2, 2023. The session could have been an opportunity for the outgoing president to assert his authority while he still sits in the Oval Office.
However, this is not what happened. Instead, the First Lady sat at the head of the table on Friday and headed the Cabinet meeting to discuss the White House Initiative on Women's Health Research, a program to fund women's health groups and projects. "We're grateful that Jill is here today – I heard that clapping, it wasn't for me," said Biden during the first two minutes of the Cabinet meeting, during which Biden almost exclusively spoke about his wife. "Here and across previous administrations, first ladies have attended these meetings for specific reasons."
"This is the first time Jill has joined us, and it goes to show how important the issue is, which she is about to speak to. It's all yours, kid," Biden concluded, handing off the reins of the meeting to his wife.
The rest of the meeting was then taken up with the First Lady reading from a binder regarding maternal health initiatives for about five minutes. Meeting attendees were even given folders with notes regarding Jill's initiatives with covers emblazoned with the seal of the president and Biden and Jill's signatures both. The meeting was then concluded by the president who spoke for just two minutes.
During the Cabinet meeting, Biden insisted that he would be "running through the tape" of the remainder of his term "because [Vice President Kamala Harris] and I are determined to keep making sure that democracy delivers what the American people are asking for."
Despite this claim, the president has been on vacation for about two-thirds of all days over the past month, mostly at his family's properties in Delaware but also to visit the homes of Democratic Party megadonors.
Following the Cabinet meeting, Jill, without her husband the president, held a press conference at the White House Rose Garden from a podium presidents usually occupy.
She held this conference along with the cast and creators of the hit TV show "The West Wing," including actor Martin Sheen and show creator and writer Aaron Sorkin, in celebration of the series' 25th anniversary.
"The work is hard and the days are long. And yes, there are times when the weight of all we have before us can just feel too heavy to carry," said Jill. "But that's where the heart lies, where the future is created, side-by-side with our family of true believers."
At the time of this event, Biden had already left the White House for the Biden family home in Delaware.
Jill is widely regarded as the most powerful first lady to enter the White House in a century, with her unofficial authority over the White House only rivaled by former First Lady Edith Wilson, who tightly controlled access to her husband, former President Woodrow Wilson, during the last year of his presidency after he suffered a debilitating stroke in October 1919.
