The senators disclosed in their findings the details about a long-hidden federal investigation into Trump's 2016 campaign funding, which has now been weaponized as part of a wider lawfare attempt to influence the upcoming presidential election. This federal investigation examined whether a $10 million contribution made by Trump to his own campaign shortly before the election had been funded by the Egyptian government, specifically by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
The probe, which started during Trump's presidency in 2017, uncovered classified U.S. intelligence indicating Sisi's intention to financially support Trump's campaign.
The investigation also involved Special Counsel Robert Mueller, whose team investigated Trump, as well as a covert court battle to acquire records from an Egyptian bank.
In early 2019, federal investigators learned about a considerable cash withdrawal from the National Bank of Egypt on Jan. 15, 2017, just five days before Trump's presidential inauguration.
The withdrawal involved an organization known as the Research and Studies Center, which requested $9,998,000 in cash. After an in-depth examination, the investigation determined there wasn't enough evidence to seek charges.
In a letter addressed to Department of Justice (DOJ) Attorney General Merrick Garland and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Christopher Wray, Grassley and Johnson accused the Biden administration of organizing an illegal leak of classified information about the investigation with the purpose of interfering in the 2024 election.
"The reporting refers to 'classified U.S. intelligence,' indicating the Justice Department and FBI officials may have divulged classified information to the media," the senators wrote.
"More than that, it also appears the Biden-Harris Justice Department and FBI intentionally leaked this information, to include potentially classified information, to the media roughly 90 days before the 2024 presidential election."
The letter calls upon the DOJ to begin a media leak investigation into the people responsible for disclosing classified details to the press. Grassley and Johnson have given Garland until Sept. 30 to reply to their request for an investigation.
The senators' allegations raise issues about the transparency of federal agencies regarding politically sensitive matters.
Grassley and Johnson contend that federal agencies have earlier shown bias by protecting Biden and his family from investigation while vigorously targeting Trump. According to the senators, this most recent revelation is another attempt to control the outcome of the coming election through media leaks and unproven accusations.
Both Grassley and Johnson are calling for accountability within the DOJ and the FBI, emphasizing that these leaks must be examined carefully to guarantee the integrity of the election process.
