This admission came in the form of an Aug. 26 letter to Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), chairman of the House Judiciary Committee (HJC). In the letter, the Facebook founder disclosed that Meta faced pressure from the White House to suppress content related to the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and the so-called "laptop from hell" owned by presidential son, Hunter Biden.
Zuckerberg's letter detailed how senior Biden administration officials persistently urged Meta to suppress content that didn't align with the administration's narrative on various issues, including COVID-19. This censorship extended to posts that were satirical or humorous, with Biden administration officials expressing "a lot of frustration with our teams when we didn't agree."
"I believe that government pressure was wrong, and I regret that we were not more outspoken about it. I feel strongly that we should not compromise our content standards due to pressure from any administration in either direction, and we're ready to push back if something like this happens again," Zuckerberg wrote.
"I also think we made some choices that, with the benefit of hindsight and new information, we wouldn't make today. Ultimately, it was our decision whether or not to take content down, and we own our decisions – including COVID-19-related changes we made to our enforcement in the wake of this pressure."

Zuckerberg regrets suppressing Hunter Biden laptop story
Aside from the pandemic-related censorship, Zuckerberg also told the HJC chairman that the Biden White House pressured Meta to suppress the Hunter Biden laptop story. First reported by the New York Post months before the 2020 presidential election, it exposed the corrupt activities of the Biden family – including that of Hunter and incumbent President Joe Biden, the family patriarch. In particular, the story featured the Biden crime family's dealings with Ukrainian energy firm Burisma.
According to Zuckerberg, the Federal Bureau of Investigation flagged it as potential Russian disinformation at the time. This prompted Meta to reduce its visibility on the platform. (Related: Hunter Biden evidence wrongly labeled disinformation by FBI: Whistleblower.)
"We sent that story to fact-checkers for review and temporarily demoted it while waiting for a reply," he admitted. "It's since been made clear that the reporting was not Russian disinformation and, in retrospect, we shouldn't have demoted the story."
"We've changed our policies and processes to make sure this doesn't happen again. For instance, we no longer temporarily demote things in the U.S. while waiting for fact-checkers."
Zuckerberg also addressed the financial contributions he made through the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, (CZI), which he founded with his wife Priscilla Chan, during the 2020 election cycle. "The idea here was to make sure local election jurisdictions around the country had the resources they needed to help people vote safely during a global pandemic," he wrote.
While Zuckerberg maintained that the CZI contributions were intended to support electoral infrastructure in a nonpartisan manner, he acknowledged that people are aware the funds disproportionately benefited Democratic strongholds. The Meta CEO stressed that his goal was neutrality and reiterated that he won't be making similar contributions in future election cycles.
"The revelations in Zuckerberg's letter have sparked renewed debate over the role of government in influencing speech on social media platforms," YourNews wrote.
