Climate Depot’s Marc Morano slams woke Starbucks for its CLIMATE HYPOCRISY
08/27/2024 // Kevin Hughes // Views

Marc Morano of Climate Depot has denounced woke coffee chain Starbucks for its climate hypocrisy, particularly focusing on its new CEO Brian Niccol.

"They're playing you for a sucker," Morano wrote on X. "The Starbucks CEO can commute 1,000 miles on a corporate jet to work, but Starbucks customers can't get a plastic straw due to the company's 'journey to reduce our environmental footprint.'"

Morano, communications director for the nonprofit think tank Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow, cited a September 2020 news release from the company and an NBC News article to back up his criticism.

"Recyclable, strawless lids for customers across the U.S. and Canada is another step in our journey to reduce our environmental footprint," Starbucks Chief Sustainability Officer Michael Kobori said in the release. "As we move closer toward our 2030 target of a 50 percent reduction in waste sent to landfills, the long-standing history of innovation within Starbucks, partnership across the industry and changing consumer behavior remain fundamental to our purpose and our prosperity as an organization."

Meanwhile, the NBC News report said Niccol – who is set to join Starbucks in September – won't be required to move to the coffee giant's headquarters in Seattle. The 50-year-old Niccol can live in his California home and take a corporate jet to his place of work – a practice that generates a bigger carbon footprint than using straws.

Based on Niccol's offer letter released in a Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing, he will receive a base salary of $1.6 million annually. He also has the chance to earn an annual cash bonus that could reach from $3.6 million to $7.2 million depending on his performance. He will also be qualified for a yearly equity awards valued up to $23 million.

A "double shot" of hypocrisy

According to NBC News, Niccol previously served as the CEO of Taco Bell and Chipotle. The coffee giant mentioned in its offer letter that it will create a remote office for him in Newport Beach and provide him with an assistant of his choice.

Despite this, a company spokesperson told CNBC's "Make It" program that Niccol will still be assumed to work from the Seattle office no less than three days a week in connection when he is not traveling for work.

"Brian's primary office and a majority of his time will be spent in our Seattle Support Center or out visiting partners and customers in our stores, roasteries, roasting facilities and offices around the world," they said. "His schedule will exceed the hybrid work guidelines and workplace expectations we have for all partners."

Since early 2023 Starbucks employees have been compelled to work from the office at least three days a week, NBC News pointed out, adding that Niccol's arrangement highlights the gap in bargaining power between high-ranking executives and the average employee in terms of flexibility.

News of Niccol's work arrangement sparked outrage in social media, prompting several commentators – including JunkScience.com founder Steve Milloy – to express their anger.

"[It's a] double shot of climate hypocrisy from Starbucks," Milloy wrote on X. "Starbucks plans to serve you coffee in a used cup to save the planet. Meanwhile, new CEO Brian Niccol will commute from home to work (1,000 miles) by private jet."
