The report from the House Judiciary Committee stated that the open borders policy espoused by President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have seen millions of illegal aliens enter the United States. It also revealed that terrorist organizations and other bad actors looking to harm Americans have also gained access to the U.S. because of the lenient border policy.
According to the report, the Biden administration has released more than 5.4 million illegal aliens into the U.S. in three and a half years. Additionally, at least 1.9 million known "gotaways" escaped into the country.
Among the more than 7.3 million illegals in the U.S. are 375 individuals on the U.S. government's terrorist watchlist who have been apprehended by Border Patrol under the current administration – over 30 times more compared to time of former President Donald Trump.
The report also noted that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has released 99 of these individuals into American communities, and immigration judges have granted bail to at least 27. Furthermore, asylum has been granted to four individuals, and cases against two known or suspected terrorists have been terminated. These findings underscore the potential national security risks posed by the current border policies. Between fiscal years 2021 and 2023, illegal immigrants on the terror watchlist apprehended by Border Patrol came from 36 countries, including nations with active terrorist groups like Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria. The report also indicated significant encounters with individuals from high-risk countries in fiscal year 2024, including over 2,000 Afghan nationals and over 500 Iranians and Syrians.
FBI Director Wray concerned about potential terrorist attacks
At a hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee in July, Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Christopher Wray testified that he is "increasingly concerned that foreign terrorists could seek to exploit vulnerabilities at the southwest border or at other ports of entry, or in other aspects of our immigration system, to facilitate an attack here in the United States."
"There has been a lot of focus on the number of known or suspected terrorists encountered at the border. But frankly, to me, the bigger concern is individuals who weren't on the watchlist at the time they came in. That is a bigger concern," he said.
A recent case involved Hasan Yousef Hamdan, a Jordanian national on the terror watchlist who was released from federal custody after attempting to breach Marine Corps Base Quantico. According to a Marine Corps Serious Incident Report obtained by Judicial Watch, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer confirmed Hamdan's watchlist status to the Marine Criminal Investigations Division.
The report described a concerning picture of the current administration's border policies and their impact on national security. With millions of illegal immigrants released into the country and thousands more evading capture, the risks posed by individuals with potential ties to terrorism have proven significant.
As federal and local authorities grapple with these challenges, the findings underscore the urgent need for comprehensive and effective border security measures to protect the U.S. from potential threats.
