Lukashenko, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, issued this sentiment in an Aug. 18 interview with the state-owned TV channel Russia-1. According to him, the neo-Nazi ideology prevalent in Kyiv does not resonate with the rest of the country's population.
"There are no longer any Nazis," Lukashenko told the outlet, adding that the few "rabid" nationalists remaining in Kyiv "no longer set the trend." He also pointed out in the same interview that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has lost the support of the majority. Around 70 percent "hate Zelensky because he promises one thing and does another," the Belarusian leader said without expounding on where he obtained the numbers.
Lukashenko added that another reason why Zelensky no longer enjoys the support of Ukraine's majority is "because people are dying" under his rule. Belarus had been inundated with fighting-age Ukrainian men "fleeing from the war" with their families.
"Out of them, 99 percent are men who do not want to fight," he continued. Minsk provides some of them with work and accommodation, while others have moved on to Western nations.
The results of an opinion poll published by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) in June indicated that around 43 percent of Ukrainians believe democracy is in decline under Zelensky. Of that 43 percent, 28 percent blame the Ukrainian government while 11 percent blame the conflict with Russia. Almost half of the overall respondents in the poll said economic conditions, including transparency and the government’s fairness toward businesses, have worsened during Zelensky's rule.
But even before the KIIS poll, the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) noted in May that Zelensky's approval rating stood at a measly 17 percent even before the formal end of his term. "Over 70 percent of the public distrusts all Ukrainian media, while about 90 percent would like to leave the country," the SVR added.
Ukrainians will eventually realize the West deceived them
According to a separate Russia Today piece, Zelensky – a comedian who later starred in the Ukrainian TV series "Servant of the People" – "was elected president in 2019 on a promise that he would find a peaceful resolution of the conflict with the Donbas republics." But he eventually ended up adopting the same hostile policies as his predecessor, former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.
Despite his five-year term officially expiring in May, Zelensky remains the de facto leader of Ukraine. He cancelled Ukraine's 2024 presidential elections, citing martial law which he announced when the Russia-Ukraine war broke out in February 2022. "When they realize that they were simply used and then they were dumped, once the Ukrainians realized that, they will come to us. We are going to rebuild everything that has been destroyed, but to a higher standard," Lukashenko said during the interview. He warned that the West wants to turn Ukrainian men into cannon fodder and Ukrainian women into sex slaves.
"Beautiful Ukrainian women are simply making a living through prostitution. And men get used any way [Kyiv's Western backers] want. Now they want to deploy them to the front line."
The Belarusian president said he had warned his Ukrainian counterpart that the West is fickle. According to Lukashenko, a new U.S. president might "refuse to honor old arrangements." He also warned Zelensky that even if the United Kingdom gives him enough money to buy a mansion somewhere, there remains the possibility of Ukrainian intelligence assassinating him for being a traitor.
