Wayne O'Rourke, 35, was sentenced to a three-year jail term for allegedly "stirring up racial hatred" during the recent anti-migration protests and riots. According to the local paper Lincolnshire Free Press, he had shared "misinformation" about Axel Rudakubana, the perpetrator of the mass stabbing attack in the English town of Southport. Rudakubana, who was born in the U.K. to Rwandan parents, killed three young girls during the July 29 attack.
The Rwandan perpetrator's attack sparked riots and protests all over the country, mainly spurred by Downing Street's lax policies toward migrants. O'Rourke reportedly gave his 90,000 followers advice on how to remain anonymous during these protests. While the advice he gave resulted in him spending time behind bars, left-wing protesters often give out these same tips without any repercussions.
Several of his posts urged residents of Southport and the city of Sunderland to take to the streets and protest. A separate post by O'Rourke urged rioters to "hold the line," citing the "us against them" remark allegedly said by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Circuit Judge Catalina Sjolin Knight of the Lincoln Crown Court told O'Rourke during sentencing: "You were not caught up in what others were doing, you were instigating it. The flames [were] fanned by keyboard warriors like you."
"This charge demonstrates that we will take fast and decisive action against anyone suspected of sharing harmful content online," commented Lincolnshire Police Chief Superintendent Kate Anderson. "We retain a commitment to proactively police and keep people safe across the county. This action shows that everyone is responsible for their actions – whether they be in public, or online."
Founder of anti-pedophile group suffers same fate as O'Rourke
O'Rourke isn't the only Briton facing jail time for allegedly "stirring up hatred" – a crime with a rather vague definition as most actions that fall under this charge are part of protected free speech. Phil Hoban, 48, suffered the same fate after a magistrate in the Leeds Crown Court sentenced him to eight months behind bars.
According to a separate Breitbart report, Hoban allegedly committed "racial abuse" toward pro-Palestinian counter-protesters during a non-violent protest in the city of Leeds on Aug. 3. He was reportedly witnessed imitating the Muslim manner of prayer "to mock their religion," making supposed slurs about Allah and rubbing his lips "toward a person of color." Judge Guy Kearl told Hoban during sentencing that his conduct and that of his fellow protesters "was designed to stir up hatred."
The 48-year-old denied allegations that he was a racist. He also denied making slurs against Allah, saying that he was chanting about a man named "Alan." (Related: 61-year-old man gets 18-month prison sentence for chanting "who the fu#k is Allah.")
According to the BBC, Hoban founded the Predator Exposure group that exposed pedophiles – but left the group after his conviction. He claimed to have exposed 440 online predators, telling Kearl during his trial that Predator Exposure had worked with police on numerous occasions to track down pedophiles.
The group played a big role in the arrest and sentencing of former Irish TV producer Kieran Creavan. Hoban's arrest followed a sting operation by the group, in which the producer was tricked into thinking he was meeting with a 13-year-old girl. Creavan was later jailed for 10 years on charges of sexual assault and child exploitation.
