UFO activist Steve Bassett said it was clear the Catholic Church knows about UFOs and possibly even has documented proof of them in the Vatican archives.
Bassett believes the Catholic Church even thinks extraterrestrial life is "important" and the institution has suggested the existence of aliens in religious art. "The Catholic Church, we have always known, has been aware of this subject going back perhaps hundreds and hundreds of years. It's gone so far as to say whoever these beings are, they [the Catholic Church] would be happy to baptize them if they wanted to be baptized," Bassett said.
This references a statement Pope Francis made back in 2014, wherein he claimed that if an alien from Mars one day showed up at the Vatican and asked to be baptized, he would personally do it.
Bassett added that "extraordinary" information regarding the Church's knowledge of extraterrestrial life is hidden away in the Vatican Library and the Vatican Apostolic Archive and could have been there for centuries.

Catholic Church may have helped cover up UFO crash in Italy in 1933
One of the biggest pieces of evidence Basset knows regarding the Catholic Church's connections come from evidence that a UFO crashed near Milan in 1933, and that after World War II, Pope Pius XII opened back channels with the United States, who ended up retrieving the alien craft and shipping it off to America.
While Bassett admits that evidence of aliens up to now has been "paltry," he asserts that a thorough investigation is necessary to either prove the allegations against the Catholic Church or clear the institution of all the allegations.
"As far as I know, there have been many, many books written on the research of this phenomena and it's the first time I'd ever heard about this potential crash in '33," Bassett stated.
He added it would prove the American government knew about alien life long before the well-known Roswell incident in 1947.
UFO experts are now trying to gain permission from the Holy See, the supreme governing body of the Catholic Church, to access the Vatican archives and peruse its thousands upon thousands of years of records to either prove or disprove the allegations that it knew about UFOs for at least 90 years.
Bassett said he believes the Church will eventually permit researchers to access its files, but it probably will not happen until after another government formally reveals the existence of aliens.
"Who exactly found it? What was the process in which it finally got to us? What was the role of the Catholic Church? How many people in our government even knew about it at the point that Roswell happened?" Bassett said. "Obviously the people at Roswell didn't, because they put out a press release that they found a flying saucer so clearly that there was no significant impediment to putting that story out at the time."
Author and religious professor Diana Walsh Pasulka said the Vatican archives are full of reports of paranormal events, such as nuns seeing glowing orbs, flying houses and other aerial phenomena.
Pasulka said these events might be better understood as "UFO-type incidents" rather than miracles. "The historical record is filled with these kinds of events, the people at the Vatican, they don't even know where to look; it's in their basements," Pasulka said.
