During the onset of the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, then-17-year-old Cristina Hineman was dealing with mental health problems, including depression and anxiety. Due to the lockdowns Hineman could not see her friends at the time. She turned to YouTube for entertainment, and she found videos that convinced her that she was dealing with gender dysphoria.
"I was like, Oh my god, trans includes all the things I've been feeling – my discomfort with my chest, my discomfort with being called 'young woman,' not being sure of who I was or what I wanted to be," she said in an interview with Jennifer Block of The Free Press.
Hineman waited until her 18th birthday in November 2021 so she can seek testosterone therapy at a Planned Parenthood clinic in New York without her parents' consent. She filled out forms in the waiting room, and then, she was led to an examination room where a nurse handed her a consent form for "masculinizing hormone therapy."
Records show that a nurse practitioner inquired about her identity and desires and noted that she had previously consulted with a mental health provider. They discussed the expected irreversible changes related to testosterone, such as growing a beard and body hair, a deepening voice and potential changes to fertility. After a brief discussion, a nurse took her blood and she was given a prescription for testosterone gel – all within 30 minutes.
However, Hineman realized she had made a grave mistake after over a year into treatment.
"I was brainwashed," she said. "A lot of people say that adults should be able to do whatever they want. But if you have mental illness that's clouding your view, or you're so misinformed about what gender dysphoria even means, then you cannot consent to such invasive treatments."
Hineman filed a lawsuit against the Planned Parenthood Federation of America in April. The medical malpractice suit seeks unspecified damages for negligence and failure to obtain informed consent from all health providers involved in her medical transition. These include the therapists who "encouraged" her desire to change genders, the plastic surgeon who removed her breasts after a superficial consult when she turned 19 and the nurse practitioner at Planned Parenthood who prescribed testosterone. Gender transition has left Hineman with physical, emotional and psychological scars
In the interview with The Free Press, Hineman, who is now 20 years old, has detailed the realizations and the permanent damages that the surgeries left her.
According to Hineman, hair now grows on the backs of her hands and the side of her face and her clitoris is permanently enlarged, making it challenging to wear fitted pants or jeans.
"I was very sensitive down there before," she admits with embarrassment. "Now it's harder to have a satisfying experience."
The physical transformation was furthered by a double mastectomy, a decision that now weighs heavily on her. Her chest is concave, scarred and fluctuates between numbness and raw sensitivity. Hineman expresses a haunting regret over the loss of the ability to breastfeed, a consideration she had not foreseen when pursuing the surgery.
For Hineman, her journey into gender identity was intertwined with a sense of rebellion.
"It was kind of like a punk thing," she explains. But unlike traditional forms of teenage defiance, hers involved medical interventions. "It’s a medicalized version of normal teen rebellion. And I got completely sucked into that."
These changes sometimes made people assume she was a male, but she just shrugged it off. "I had the realization that I can’t continue to let this bother me in any direction."
