Erdogan says Turkey could ENTER ISRAEL to defend Palestinians against IDF aggression
08/01/2024 // Ramon Tomey // Views

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has suggested the possibility of his country entering Israel in support of Palestinians.

"We should be very strong so that Israel cannot do this stuff to Palestine. Just like we entered Nagorno-Karabakh, just like we entered Libya, we can do [something] similar to them," he said during a July 28 gathering of his ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) in the Turkish city of Rize. "There is no reason not to do it. We must be strong to take these steps."

Erdogan pertained to Ankara's support for Azerbaijan in its conflict with Armenia last year and its military intervention in Libya during his remarks at the AKP event. (Related: Turkey halts ALL trade with Israel over Gaza genocide.)

While the comments appear to be a significant step up in his harsh words toward the Jewish state over its genocide of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, it remains unclear whether his comment reflected any concrete plans by the country or was just intended to appeal to his political base.

Nevertheless, Erdogan's words did not sit well with Tel Aviv. Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz took to X to admonish the Turkish leader. Katz warned that Erdogan could end up like the late Iraqi strongman Saddam Hussein, who was executed in 2006.

"Erdogan follows in the footsteps of Saddam and threatens to attack Israel. Just let him remember what happened there and how it ended," the foreign minister wrote. In response, AK Party spokesman Omer Celik blasted Katz as a "Nazi."

Fahrettin Altun, head of media and communications for Erdogan's office, said on July 29 that Turkey was a "serious and responsible state committed to peace and stability in the region." He also warned that "anyone who is crazy enough to test our limits will get a swift and resolute response," though Altun did not refer to any specific plan by Ankara to act against Tel Aviv.

Erdogan heavily critical of Israel

"Erdogan has stood up for Hamas, … referring to it as an "organization of liberation" while harshly criticizing Israel," DNYUZ pointed out. "He has compared [Israeli] Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Adolf Hitler and called him a 'psychopath' and a 'vampire.'"

Diplomatic relations between Turkey and Israel broke down in the early months of Israel's military campaign against Hamas, with Ankara announcing in May that it was halting all trade in Israel. Turkey has played no military role in the Gaza conflict despite Erdogan's remarks and the country's policy of allowing Hamas political figures to stay there. However, support for the Palestinian people and outrage at Israel's atrocities are common in Turkish society.

Erdogan's recent remarks appear to be the culmination of earlier statements he made, threatening war against Israel over Tel Aviv's military campaign against the Palestinian people. During an Oct. 28 pro-Palestine rally in the Turkish city of Istanbul, Erdogan accused Israel of "openly committing war crimes" and lauded Hamas as "freedom fighters."

"In the past, [the Nazis] were massacring the Jewish people in the gas chambers and they were indeed wiping out regions with bombs. A similar mentality is being shown in Gaza today," the Turkish president told the audience.

"From now on, we will continue on our path with the motto that we may suddenly knock on your door one night."

Erdogan's insinuation that members of the Turkish Armed Forces could come to Israel unannounced triggered an ecstatic reception from the crowd, which chanted "Turkish military to Gaza." He concluded his speech by telling the crowd that Ankara was preparing to "tell the world that Israel is a war criminal."
