Trump rewrites RNC speech to focus on UNITY following assassination attempt

Former President Donald Trump has rewritten his speech at the Republican National Convention (RNC) to focus on unity, following the failed July 13 assassination attempt on him.

According to Just The News, Trump is set to give his speech on July 18, the last day of the four-day RNC held in Wisconsin. The convention marks the formal announcement of him being the Republican Party's presidential nominee alongside Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance, which Trump named as his running mate.

"The speech I was going to give … was going to be humdinger," Trump told the Washington Examiner on July 14, a day after the assassination attempt. "Had this not happened, this would've been one of the most incredible speeches [primarily focused on President Joe Biden's policies]. Honestly, it's going to be a whole different speech now."

According to the former president, he has switched from planning to excite his voter base to demonstrating his belief that the July 13 assassination attempt changed the election campaign entirely. Both the GOP and the Democrats have acknowledged this in the aftermath of the July 13 incident, with Trump telling the Examiner that people all across the country from different walks of life and different political views have called him.

Ultimately, the real estate mogul and GOP presidential nominee remarked that his speech will meet the moment that history demands. "It is a chance to bring the country together. I was given that chance," he said.

"This is a chance to bring the whole country, even the whole world, together. This speech will be a lot different, a lot different that it would've been two days ago."

Trump's "fist in the air" gesture exudes strength

According to Trump, he was saved from death due to his decision to turn from the crowd and look at a screen. He had to look away from the crowd to point at data he was using in the speech at the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

"That reality is just setting in," he said. "I rarely look away from the crowd. Had I not done that in that moment, well, we would not be talking today, would we?"

Early in the morning of July 14, Trump took to Truth Social to speak about the attempt on his life. According to his post, it was "God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening" and that he would "fear not."

The real estate mogul also commented on his decision to raise his hand when the Secret Service was leading him offstage. The photograph of him holding his fist in the air, blood streaming across his face as the agents surrounded him, has already become the iconic image of the 2024 election. He explained that the gesture sought to let the people know that he was OK "and that America goes on, we go forward, that we are strong." When Trump stood up and saw the crowd had not moved, he needed to tell them that he and the country were going to be alright.

"The energy coming from the people there in that moment, they just stood there. It's hard to describe what that felt like, but I knew the world was looking. I knew that history would judge this, and I knew I had to let them know we are OK."

Trump also hailed three attendees – Corey Comperatore, David Dutch and James Copenhaver – who were shot by would-be assassin Thomas Matthew Crooks. Comperatore, former chief of the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company, died during the incident. Dutch and Copenhaver were critically wounded, but are now in stable condition and recovering at a local hospital.
