The whistleblower named Elizabeth Jones (a pseudonym) exposed this in a July 10 op-ed published in LifeSiteNews. She currently works a desk job at the California Department of State Hospitals (DSH), one of 12 subsidiaries under the California Health and Human Services Agency (CalHHS). The DSH's roughly 13,000 employees, including Jones, provide mental health services to some 6,500 patients admitted into five state-run hospitals – Atascadero, Coalinga, Metropolitan in Los Angeles County, Napa and Patton.
Jones recounted how it took her around two hours to click through one such training module, "a mandatory course about what so-called 'LGBT-affirming care is, how to deliver it and why it matters." A psychologist named Danielle and a social worker named David, both from Napa State Hospital, began by differentiating sexual orientation and gender identity. Sexual orientations include heterosexual, gay, lesbian, bisexual and more, while gender identity pertains to self-labels such as cisgender, transgender, non-binary and more.
David also introduced the "Gender Unicorn" infographic about "the difference between gender identity, gender expression, sex assigned at birth, and sexual and romantic orientation." Meanwhile, Danielle used the woke activist phrase "sex assigned at birth" – but nevertheless acknowledged that "learning about sex assigned at birth, gender identity and sexual orientation may be commonplace for some of you and complex and confusing for others."

"We are grateful that you are willing to learn about these concepts and incorporate them into your work with patients," she said about the LGBT training module, which was ironically mandatory for Jones and the almost 250,000 public sector employees in the Golden State. Another training module claimed that "a history of oppression impacts the attitudes of caretakers and the quality of care received by LGBT patients today." According to David, societal stigma caused by "unrelenting stress" is to blame for LGBT individuals having more mental health problems. This, despite the fact that homosexuality and transgenderism are overwhelmingly accepted and even celebrated in the Golden State.
"Stigma arises about LGBT people because larger society views them as having deviant erotic behaviors and gender performances. It is imperative that we refrain from jumping to conclusions that erroneously link mental illness with patients' identities," the social worker said.
The psychologist pointed out that the current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) no longer uses the term "gender identity disorders" in reference to transgenderism. She nevertheless chastised the DSM for using the term "gender dysphoria" – a diagnosis of which is required for so-called "gender affirming" procedures that are actually surgical castration.
Jones considered requesting an exemption to the training given that she has no contact with patients at the DSH hospital where she works, but eventually dismissed the idea. She is also a practicing Catholic and believes that homosexual acts are "intrinsically disordered and "contrary to the natural law" as per the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
"There is little upside and lots of potential downside to outing myself as a DEI [diversity, equity and inclusion] dissenter amid the state's current political climate," Jones wrote as to why she chose not to apply for an exemption. According to her, the LGBT modules she was required to take imply that "staff indoctrination is one goal of the training."
