Spain to join South Africa’s genocide case against Israel
06/10/2024 // Ethan Huff // Views

Another country, Spain, wants in on the lawsuit filed by South Africa in the top court of the United Nations (UN) accusing Israel of committing genocide in the Gaza Strip.

Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares announced this week that his country will join the case before the Dutch-based International Court of Justice (ICJ). Spain also joined Ireland and Norway in officially recognizing a State of Palestine.

Israel's response to the Hamas attack on Oct. 7, 2023, was "genocidal in character because [it is] intended to bring about the destruction of a substantial part of the Palestinian national, racial, and ethnical group," the suit alleges.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vehemently denies any and all wrongdoing in Gaza, claiming "it is not we who have come to perpetuate genocide; it is Hamas."

According to Netanyahu, the entire world "would murder all of us if it could," this referring to the Jewish people, which is why Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are retaliating so heavily against Gaza.

Growing worldwide support for a two-state solution in Israel

Early on, the ICJ requested that Israel take additional measures beyond what it was employing to minimize the loss of civilian life in Gaza. Now, the ICJ is demanding a full ceasefire, stating that Israel "must immediately halt its military offensive, and any other action" in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.

So far, Israel has done absolutely nothing that the ICJ or any other outside party, including the government of the United States, has suggested. Because of this, Spain and other countries are taking action.

The first European country to formally rally behind the South Africa suit, Spain's "sole goal is to put an end to the war and to advance on the road of applying a two-state solution," Manuel Albares said.

Because Israel refuses to stop the carnage, Spain is taking action because "we want peace to return to Gaza and the Middle East – and for that to happen we must all support the court," Manuel Albares added.

In addition to Spain, Mexico, Colombia, Nicaragua, Libya and the Palestinian Authority have all filed requests to join the case. The ICJ has yet to issue approval for these requests.

More than two dozen other countries, including Turkey and Ireland, have signaled that they plan to intervene against Israel as well in the coming days.

Though all rulings issued by the ICJ are legally binding, the court technically has no viable way to actually enforce them. So no matter how this goes, it is likely that Israel will forge ahead with its agenda regardless of what the rest of the world has to say about it.

The Palestinian health ministry's latest death count in Gaza hovers around 36,000. Israel's losses, conversely, have been estimated at around 1,400 deaths.

"Spain is breaking away from the NATO party line," one commenter wrote about these somewhat shocking new developments.

Another accused the fake Jews of committing genocide "on the true descendants of Abraham," describing the people of Gaza as "semitic Palestinians."

"And if you complain about it, you get called an 'antisemite,'" this person added. "It doesn't get much sicker than that."

"The U.S. and Israel are a danger to world peace," suggested another. "Israel lies all the time. Zionism must be eradicated. They are the cancer of this planet."

Someone else pointed out that Israel continues to use "internationally banned phosphorus bombs" on the people of Gaza – bombs that are being supplied to them by the U.S.

"They're destroying olive trees and poisoning the ground and water," this person added – the olive branch historically and biblically represents peace, by the way.
