The controversy began after he made remarks about the auto industry and China at a speech in Ohio over the weekend.
He began: “If you’re listening, President Xi – and you and I are friends – but he understands the way I deal. Those big monster car manufacturing plants that you’re building in Mexico right now…you’re going to not hire Americans and you’re going to sell the cars to us, no. We’re going to put a 100% tariff on every single car that comes across the line, and you’re not going to be able to sell those cars if I get elected.”
He continued: “Now if I don’t get elected, it’s going to be a bloodbath for the whole — that’s gonna be the least of it,” he added. “It’s going to be a bloodbath for the country. That will be the least of it. But they’re not going to sell those cars. They’re building massive factories.”
To anyone who has seen or viewed the full speech, it is more than clear what he is referring to: the bloodbath of the American auto industry should Trump lose in November because the Biden administration will let Chinese vehicles flood the U.S. market.
However, the media immediately jumped all over the “bloodbath” part and shamelessly reported it as though he was actually threatening to create a bloodbath in the nation if he doesn’t win the election.

There were a slew of misleading headlines to this effect. For example, NBC News used the headline “Trump says there will be a ‘bloodbath’ if he loses the election,” while ABC News went with “Trump says there will be ‘bloodbath’ if he loses 2024 election, ramps up anti-migrant rhetoric.”
The official Biden/Harris X account edited the clip down to just nine seconds, which took the comments even more out of context, and then had the nerve to release a statement about Trump’s comments that continued to misrepresent them. It also painted him as a cartoon villain, closing with: “He wants another January 6, but the American people are going to give him another electoral defeat this November because they continue to reject his extremism, his affection for violence, and his thirst for revenge.”
The false narrative was so prevalent that many are speculating the Biden/Harris social media campaign team has been encouraging people to continue misrepresenting Trump's comments.
It’s worth noting that many of these same outlets have used the term “bloodbath” in the past to refer to staff layoffs at various companies and other stories related to economic downturns.
Elon Musk calls out mainstream media on X
Elon Musk weighed in on the drama on X, calling out MSNBC host Joe Scarborough for a post in which he wrote: “Donald Trump’s America. And he is proud of it. Promised another “bloodbath” if he loses again.”
In response, Musk wrote: “Jan 6 was not a “bloodbath” by any definition and Trump was referring to job losses in the auto industry when he used that word. Your post is extremely misleading.”
Scarborough then deleted the tweet.
Musk also wrote “Legacy media lies” in response to a post by journalist Ian Miles Cheong calling the media “extremely disingenuous” for taking the comments out of context in this manner. In another post, he wrote that there was a “hoax-making in process” and that it was “surprisingly effective.”
This should serve as a strong reminder of exactly why Americans cannot trust the mainstream media to tell them the truth about anything.
