This is according to a report by Fox News, citing campaign finance records. This comes as Gov. Greg Abbott is engaged in a feud with the White House over control of the state's border amid a surge of illegals into America.
Soros, as reported by Fox News, has contributed over $3 million to a chain of political action committees (PACs) in the state. The Hungarian-born American financier is the only funding source for the Texas Majority PAC, contributing with his Democracy PAC II a total of $2.25 million last year.
While the group had no public profile last year, local media reported early this month that it had been initiated by former staffers from the unsuccessful gubernatorial campaign of Democrat Beto O'Rourke.
The former congressman's electoral attempts to unseat Republican Senator Ted Cruz in 2018 and then to replace incumbent Republican Governor Greg Abbott in 2022 didn't succeed despite setting fundraising records for the state.
A representative for the Texas Majority PAC told the Texas Tribune that the donations were intended to help the organization assemble the vote "on a scale never seen before, year after year in the key regions of our state." (Related: Soros network ramps up investment in Latino voter mobilization.)
Regarding the finances, the group was just starting, deputy executive director Katherine Fischer said in a statement. "We need millions of more dollars and hundreds of more full-time staff to do this," she added.
Soros also contributed at least $300,000 in the second half of 2023 to CTX Votes, seemingly a reference to Concordia Texas University, $200,000 to the Dallas County Democratic PAC and $100,000 to a group named First Tuesday that did not seem to have an online imprint.
The billionaire also provided $250,000 to the Texas Organizing Project, which he and his organizations have assisted to the amount of many million dollars over the past several years and which witnessed one of the beneficiaries of its bail payments go on to kill the parents he had been imprisoned for attacking before it got him released.
While Texas has historically been deemed a completely Republican state, President Joe Biden only lost to then-incumbent President Donald Trump by six percent in 2020. Over the past few years, the state has also been seeing a population flow of hundreds of thousands of Americans who have left their liberal strongholds such as California, leaving soaring crime and high housing costs and bringing their liberal votes into the Lone Star State.
Given its place on the Mexican border, Texas has also seen serious population growth from illegal immigration.
Meanwhile, the move by Soros to pour out major cash into turning Texas blue in 2024 shows Democrats are "afraid" of the GOP's momentum in the state, Republican candidate and ex-Rep. Mayra Flores said in an interview with the Washington Examiner.
Soros has personally moved at least $100,000 since August 2023 to the Democratic Party Executive Committee in Cameron County, which is a portion of the Lone Star State's 34th Congressional District, where Flores is looking to unseat Rep. Vicente Gonzalez.
He also made donations to Hidalgo and Dallas counties and has wired hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Texas Majority PAC, based on financial disclosures.
Flores, who lost to Gonzalez in 2022 after winning a special election early that year, said she was surprised to discover Soros' large contributions in Texas.
For years, Democrats have tried to turn Texas blue as shown by O'Rourke's fruitless campaigns in 2018 and 2022 even though the Left has been unable to change the minds of conservative voters on major topics like abortion and immigration.
"They see the work we're putting in. George Soros and his far-left dark money allies are pouring all this money into Texas 34 to prevent us from flipping seats. It works to our advantage because we're going to be able to encourage more people, not just in Texas 34, but throughout the country, to join the fight, to donate to our campaign," Flores said.
