Texas Military Department ramps up recruitment to support border security efforts

Amid Gov. Greg Abbott's escalating feud with the administration of President Joe Biden over the migrant invasion, the Texas Military Department (TMD) has ramped recruitment to support border security efforts.

On Jan. 21, the Biden administration urged Texas to stop blocking Border Patrol agents from entering a part of the border in Eagle Pass, which the Texas National Guard had recently taken control overDepartment of Homeland Security (DHS) General Counsel Jonathan Meyer wrote to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton that the use of Texas National Guard troops, equipment and barriers is unconstitutional and limits Border Patrol's ability to access around 2.5 miles of the border in the city.

This battle over the border escalated to what it is today, with Abbott insisting that Texas has the right to police the border despite Biden and the Supreme Court allowing Border Patrol agents to take command of certain sections of the border whenever necessary.

To support the Lone Star state's efforts to defy Biden, the TMD has ramped up recruiting efforts, including offering volunteers who want to work with the TMD full-time a pay rate of $55 per day.

These volunteers must already be members of the TMD and will be specifically tasked with participating in Operation Lone Star, the Abbott administration's specific anti-illegal immigration project. They will be deployed as additional security assets to high-threat areas along the border to prevent criminal organizations from illegally trafficking drugs and people into Texas. (Related: 24 Republican governors pledge to support Texas in securing US-Mexico border.)

"Operation Lone Star integrates TMD with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) to deploy border security assets to high-threat areas to deny criminal organizations the ability to illegally move drugs and people into Texas," said the TMD in a statement. "The Texas Military Department has new full-time positions available for the Operation Lone Star border support mission."

"These positions offer an array of benefits, including lodging and per diem of $55 per day. Volunteers must be medically and administratively deployable and a military member of the Texas Military Department," the TMD continued.

Abbott continues to defy Biden administration

Abbott remains defiant with Biden despite the Supreme Court's decision in favor of U.S. Border Patrol agents.

On Jan. 22, the Supreme Court allowed Border Patrol agents to resume cutting razor wires installed on the U.S.-Mexico border after the Biden administration contended that the wire hindered Border Patrol agents' access along the border. The razor wire, set up along the banks of the Rio Grande, has been at the center of an escalating dispute between the Biden administration and the state of Texas over immigration enforcement.

The court order clears the way for Border Patrol agents to cut or clear out concertina wire that Abbott had authorized to deter migrants from entering the United States illegally. Justices provided no explanations for their votes, but the one-page order is seen as a victory for the Biden administration while the legal battle over the wire continues.

But then, Abbott criticized "Biden's reckless open-border policies" and argued that the wire is an "effective deterrent against illegal border crossings" in his tweet after the decision.

"We continue to deploy this razor wire to repel illegal immigration," he posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, despite the ruling.

Andrew Mahaleris, a spokesperson for Abbott's office, also argued that the absence of deterrents such as razor wire makes the job of Texas border personnel more difficult and encourages migrants to make unsafe crossings.

"The absence of razor wire and other deterrence strategies encourages migrants to make unsafe and illegal crossings between ports of entry while making the job of Texas National Guard soldiers and DPS troopers more dangerous and difficult. This case is ongoing, and Governor Abbott will continue fighting to defend Texas' property and its constitutional authority to secure the border."
