Twenty-five Republican governors have so far spoken out against the Biden administration and lent their support to Abbott. As of press time, the only Republican governor to not release a statement backing Abbott is the self-proclaimed liberal Republican Gov. Phil Scott of Vermont.
The ongoing feud escalated after the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Biden administration when it said that federal Border Patrol agents could remove the razor wire barriers installed by Texas along the border. (Related: Supreme Court says federal government can REMOVE RAZOR WIRE Texas installed along the border… but Gov. Abbott DEFIES the order.)
This feud comes as record-breaking numbers of illegal immigrants are pouring across the border into the United States. In December 2023 alone, a record 225,000 illegal immigrants crossed the border.
In a joint statement published on Thursday, Jan. 25, these Republican governors stated their support for Abbott's efforts to exercise what he claims is Texas's "constitutional right to self-defense."
"President Biden and his administration have left Americans and our country completely vulnerable to unprecedented illegal immigration pouring across the southern border," read the statement. "Instead of upholding the rule of law and securing the border, the Biden administration has attacked and sued Texas for stepping up to protect American citizens from historic levels of illegal immigrants, deadly drugs like fentanyl, and terrorists entering our country."
"We stand in solidarity with our fellow governor, Greg Abbott, and the State of Teas in utilizing every tool and strategy, including razor wire fences, to secure the border," added the statement signed by every other Republican governor in the United States except Scott. "We do it in part because the Biden administration is refusing to enforce immigration laws already on the books and is illegally allowing mass parole across America of migrants who entered our country illegally."
Some of these governors have used their personal social media accounts to share messages of support for the embattled Abbott.
"Virginia stands with Texas," wrote Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin. "[Abbott] is doing the job Biden and his border czar refuse to do to secure our border. The Biden administration has turned every state into a border state. We must stop the flow of fentanyl, save lives and secure our southern border."
"Wyoming stands in solidarity with Gov. Abbott and the State of Texas in utilizing every tool and strategy to secure the border and protect American citizens," said Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon. "We are all border states now."
"Our southern border is a warzone. When I visited the border over the summer, I saw just how much Joe Biden has deteriorated our national security," said South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem. "I will continue to support [Abbott] in his fight to secure our southern border."
"If the Constitution really made states powerless to defend themselves against an invasion, it wouldn't have been ratified in the first place and Texas would have never joined the union when it did," said Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. "Texas is upholding the law while Biden is flouting it. Florida will keep assisting Texas with personnel and assets."
Some of these governors have also expressed their repugnance at Democratic Texas Reps. Greg Casar and Joaquin Castro, who have called for Biden to take federal control of the Texas National Guard over Abbott's refusal to bow down to the Biden administration.
"We can create an immigration system that is safe, orderly and humane," said Casar on his personal X account. "It's Democrats' job to push back on razor wire, inhumane cages and broken policies of the past."
