According to the Daily Mail, the supposedly "gender-neutral" term was included in recommendations for several respiratory vaccinations for pregnant women. The guidance advised injections for the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and influenza. While usually mild, all three pathogens can be deadly in pregnant women.
"[The] CDC recommends pregnant people get a flu vaccine by the end of October, although flu vaccination should continue as long as flu is circulating," said the guidance, which was revised in September. "Getting a flu vaccine by the end of October helps protect pregnant people and their babies before flu activity begins to increase. Pregnant people may receive a flu vaccine during any trimester of pregnancy."
Roger Severino, former director of the Department of Health and Human Services' Office for Civil Rights (OCR), denounced the CDC for caving in to "wokeism." He blasted the CDC for using supposedly "gender-neutral" terms and pointed out that these were "offensive to women."
"[The CDC is] literally trying to erase the concept of what it means to be female, which is extraordinarily anti-science," Severino told the Mail. "It's anti-science in the extreme because where the biological reality of male and female matters most is in the health sciences and in medicine, and to politicize it offends science and common sense. There is no medical reason to start changing basic scientific terminology."
Stella O'Malley, director of the Genspect campaign group, meanwhile warned that the public health agency's guidance was "dangerous." She also expressed disappointment over the CDC needlessly choosing "to use more complicated language than they need to."
"It's an appalling example of how politics is increasingly interfering with medicine," said O'Malley. "There was no need to replace the word 'woman' with the words 'pregnant person.'"
"In medical matters, clarity and simplicity should be prioritized so that everyone can understand what is involved. Some people, especially those for whom English is not a first language, will not understand what is meant by 'pregnant people' – yet they would readily understand 'mothers.'"
CDC now the center of wokeism and political correctness
The use of "pregnant people" instead of "pregnant women" is the latest example of the public health agency making its advice gender-neutral in an attempt to be more inclusive to transgenders. However, this wasn't the first time the CDC was caught red-handed with this.
In November 2022, the Mail pointed out that the word "woman" was missing from the agency's advice regarding the flu vaccine. At the time, the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) described the exclusion as a "purely political move." In July, the CDC drew flak for espousing the view that trans women – men pretending to be the opposite gender – could breastfeed. The agency's website replaced the supposedly gendered term "breastfeeding" with "chestfeeding." However, the CDC failed to highlight the hormonal-related health risks to the baby.
The AAPS later remarked that the CDC was "cowering to political forces" at the expense of sound medical advice. It also blasted the public health agency for trying to "force acceptance of an absurdity."
"The CDC is supposed to be an apolitical bastion of science, but here they are cowering to political forces – a small minority but highly influential entities – who are trying to change language Orwellian-style to force acceptance of an absurdity," said AAPS Executive Director Dr. Jane Orient.
"All pregnant persons are women. A trans man is a woman who is trying to alter her body to resemble a man's. She is endangering her baby's health if she is taking testosterone, [and] the CDC ought to be warning about that."
