Special Agent Zachary Mitlitsky of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) disclosed these perfectly kept ledgers in an affidavit submitted to the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts. He said Han Lee and Junmyung Lee, two of the accused ringleaders, maintained these ledgers. The two also managed to conceal earnings from the scheme that amounted to more than a million dollars.
"Han maintained ledgers detailing the daily activity of her brothels. At the time of the search warrant execution, one such ledger was open to a page showing the stage names, appointment dates and times and earnings of the women. Next to the ledgers were envelopes containing bulk cash and handwritten notes with the stage names of women and a tally of their earnings," wrote Mitlitsky.
Investigators raided Han's luxury apartments at Massachusetts and Virginia and found dozens of gift cards and luxury bags and shoes from renowned designers, mainly used to launder prostitution proceeds. The raid also yielded $22,000 in cash, 16 cell phones, detailed ledgers of their financial records and a Louis Vuitton shoe box with hundreds of well-organized money order receipts. Bulk quantities of condoms, lingerie, UTI and pregnancy testing kits and fake eyelashes were also seized.
Meanwhile, a separate search at Junmyung's apartment in Dedham, Massachusetts yielded $5,000 in cash, four ledgers/appointment books and multiple computers and cellphones. A photograph of an appointment book in Mitlitsky's affidavit revealed that at least one sex worker had worked for about 10 hours on October 18, 2022. Junmyung, like Han, displayed a penchant for lavish spending – with authorities also seizing a Chevrolet Corvette valued at nearly $70,000.
Bank deposits for Junmyung totaled $378,365, while Han's bank accounts showed $965,000 in mostly cash deposits dating back to December 2019. However, neither of the two ringleaders has ever worked a legitimate job in years.
According to Mitlitsky, Han was in charge of communicating with sex workers. She reportedly outlines house rules and detailed information about anticipated customers, services, pricing and schedules. Meanwhile, Junmyung is believed to be in charge of booking appointments for customers.
Acting U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts Joshua Levy disclosed the alleged identities of the johns at the time of Junmyung and Han's arrest.
"They are doctors; they are lawyers; they are accountants; they are elected officials; they are executives of high-tech companies and pharmaceutical companies; they are military officers, government contractors, professors [and] scientists," he said. "They are the men who fuel this commercial sex ring." (Related: DOJ investigating high-end brothel network whose clients include elected officials.)
Levy further disclosed that the investigation dates back to the summer of 2022 when authorities identified several buyers through surveillance, phone records, and interviews. Junmyung and Han, alongside another accomplice, operated multiple brothels in Massachusetts and Virginia from July 2020 to the present. Appointments were reportedly booked on a 'cash-only' basis, with fees ranging from $350 to $600 per hour.
However, on Nov. 9, the Department of Justice announced that the high-end prostitution ring could have links to an espionage plot targeting elected officials and military officers. Even investigative reporter Paul Sperry hinted at X, formerly known as Twitter, the potential connection to espionage.
"Investigators suspect the prostitution ring may have been part of a Chinese espionage plot targeting high-tech government contracting centers like Cambridge and Tysons Corner," he said.
