Trump gains 9-POINT LEAD over Biden in Pennsylvania poll
10/19/2023 // Laura Harris // Views

Former President Donald Trump is enjoying a nine-point lead over incumbent President Joe Biden, according to the results of a recent poll.

The poll conducted by Emerson College surveyed 430 registered voters in Pennsylvania between Oct. 1 and Oct. 4. It found that 45 percent of respondents in the Keystone State favor Trump, while only 36 percent favor Biden. Eleven percent of respondents prefer a third candidate, while eight percent remain undecided.

Trump is very much favored among independent voters, with 44 percent supporting the real estate mogul-turned-president compared to Biden's 14 percent. Another 42 percent of independent voters remain undecided or express support for another candidate. Notably, this result reflects a shift among Pennsylvania voters since the 2020 elections. That year, 43 percent of respondents had cast their ballots for Biden while 42 percent had supported Trump.

The poll highlighted Biden's approval rating in the Keystone State. Only 31 percent of registered voters hold a favorable view of his performance, while 51 percent disapprove, resulting in a net approval rating of -20. An additional 18 percent of respondents have neutral feelings or don't have an opinion regarding the president's performance.

The survey also probed Trump and Biden supporters on their loyalty to their respective candidates. Among Trump supporters, exactly half of the respondents say there's nothing the former president could do or say in the coming months to change their support for him in the 2024 presidential race. Meanwhile, 22 percent say some actions or statements by Trump could alter their allegiance and 28 percent are undecided.

On the other hand, among Biden supporters, 53 percent say they would remain steadfast in their support regardless of Biden's future actions or statements, while 17 percent say some actions or statements by the president could make him lose their support. Additionally, 30 percent of Biden supporters are uncertain.

Poll: Most Michiganders no longer looking forward to 2024 Trump-Biden rematch

Over at the Great Lakes State, a poll that surveyed Michigan residents found that more than half of Democratic-leaning voters there disapprove of a potential rematch between Trump and Biden on the 2024 ballot.

A Michigan Poll commissioned by the Marketing Resource Group (MRG) and conducted from Oct. 2 to Oct. 8 revealed this finding. It found that 84 percent of Democrats are not interested in the rematch, compared to the 43 percent of Republicans anticipating the showdown.

Of the Democrats polled by MRG, 79 percent say they back Biden's presidential bid. Meanwhile, 85 percent of Republicans surveyed say they back the former president's return to the White House.

The poll further indicated that, if a rematch between Trump and Biden were to take place, the former president currently enjoys a seven-point lead in Michigan, with 42 percent of respondents stating they would support him. Meanwhile, only 35 percent confirm their allegiance to Biden.

"If the rematch takes place, it will be unique and considered like two incumbents running against each other. Both have saturated name [identification and] records to defend having served in the same office, and voters have strong opinions one way or another about their candidate choice," said Jenell Leonard, owner of MRG.

"The waning support for Biden from his base should be concerning to his party. It conveys they no longer have faith in their candidate; they lack the confidence that he can win re-election. This is a candidate problem, not a party problem. Democrats do have a bench of options and should seriously reconsider a change at the top of their ticket."
