Sunak touched on various topics during his speech at the Conservative Party Conference (CPC) held in the city of Manchester – including the issue of sex and gender. "Patients should know when hospitals are talking about men or women," he told his fellow Tories during an Oct. 4 conference.
"We shouldn't get bullied into believing that people can be any sex they want to be. A man is a man and a woman is a woman. That's just common sense."
Aside from this, the PM also committed to passing legislation that would ensure "sexual and sadistic" killers spend their lives in prison. Sunak also expressed his belief that it shouldn't be controversial for parents to be informed about what their children are being taught in school regarding relationships.
The comments by the Tory leader came shortly after the country's National Health Service (NHS) decided to limit medical treatments for transgender children. Back in June, it announced a temporary ban on puberty blocker prescriptions to children under 18 seeking gender-affirming care at gender identity clinics. Not the first time Sunak triggered the woke mob
This is not the first time the incumbent British PM has made such statements regarding gender identity. In April, he also made headlines when he agreed with the statement of the Tory-supporting website Conservative Home that all women "haven't got a penis."
"As a general operating principle for me, biological sex is vitally, fundamentally important in these questions," added Sunak. "We can't forget that."
Sunak stressed the importance of compassion, understanding and tolerance for those questioning their gender. However, he asserted that the issue of biological sex was fundamentally important to women's rights and women's spaces.
In June, LGBT news outlet PinkNews accused Sunak of mocking trans women following the leak of a secretly recorded clip. In the footage, a man purported to be the British PM can be heard making jokes dehumanizing and marginalizing trans women.
"It shows his spectacular misjudgment and why he's completely unfit to lead our country," the outlet said. The British politician then made comments about Member of Parliament (MP) Ed Davey of the Liberal Democrats and the concept of "women having penises," using the latter as a butt of his jokes. This drew raucous laughter from the Tory MPs present.
The video has sparked outrage among activists and lawmakers alike.
"The veneer of freedom of speech publicly is one thing. But to make jokes in private, it's another thing altogether," said an anonymous source who shared the video footage. "You wouldn't make jokes about other marginalized people the way he did about trans people,"
"It is profoundly depressing – this whole 'othering' of minorities – pretty much any minority," an unnamed senior Tory MP remarked. "Without stopping to think we have equalities legislation for a reason, to stop discrimination against anyone with a protected characteristic – we should be trying to understand and support, not belittle and demonize."
A spokesperson for Sunak defended the PM's comments, stating that it was "a joke aimed at a political opponent rather than a specific group."
